SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – All-Americans Joe Rodriguez and Eric Fuhs each won two individual events and were part of a winning relay leading the Bears to a 180-107 season opening win over host Springfield.

Rodriguez won the 50 freestyle (20.84) and the 100 freestyle (48.16) while Fuhs won the 100 breaststroke (1:00.40) and the 200 breaststroke (2:13.99) while the Bears 200 freestyle relay of Matthew Fritz, Fuhs, Tyler Dominick and Rodriguez won with a time of 1:37.71.

Also for the Bears, Samuel Chapman won the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.45) in his collegiate debut while CJ Omweg won the 100 backstroke (56.43), Derek Ledford won the 200 butterfly (2:00.61), Devin McClure won the 200 backstroke (1:59.14) and John Feliz won the 500 freestyle (4:57.98).

Josie McGuire won the 400 IM with a time of 4:47.26 and placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.09) to highlight the Bears in a season-opening loss to Springfield and the University of Rhode Island.

Springfield beat the Bears 175-125 while URI was 186-109 winner over Coast Guard.

The Bears had plenty of second place finishes on the afternoon with Emily Benson in the 200 freestyle (2:00.26), Megan Bolin in the 200 butterfly (2:17.54), Sarah Passilla in the 100 freestyle (55.41), Lindsay Blake in the 500 freestyle (5:23.73) while the Bears 200 freestyle relay team of Benson, Hannah Fernandes, Melody Pompay and Blake were second with a time of 1:44.38.

The Bears are back in action on Friday night at Wheaton at 6:00.

Springfield, Mass. – The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team split a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon in Art Linkletter Natatorium.  The Pride prevailed over Coast Guard, 175-125, and dropped a 179-116 decision to the University of Rhode Island.

In the 200 medley relay to start the meet, Springfield was edged for second-place with a 1:51.58 following the efforts of Grace Moore (Glastonbury, Conn.), Lefteri Roba (Worcester, Mass.), Mikaili Charlemagne (Gros Islet, St. Lucia), and Brianna Magee (Hauppauge, N.Y.).

Charlemagne sprinted her way to a win in the 50 free in 24.81, closely followed by Magee’s time of 24.91, and also won the 100 free after touching in 55.15.  Roba totaled a 11:00.62 in the 1,000 free and just missed on winning the 200 breast as her time of 2:30.78 was just .08 off the winning time.   She also placed third in the 500 free in 5:23.88.

Moore was the runner up in the 100 back in 1:00.71 and the 200 back with a 2:11.10, as well as the 400 IM (4:48.39). Izzy Ripp (Selden, N.Y.) turned in a 1:11.79 in the 100 breast, while in the 200 fly, Madisen Crowley (Manchester, Conn.) registered a 2:18.10, and Danielle Hoffner (Bridgewater, N.J.) swam a 1:02.77 in the 100 fly.

On the three-meter board, Bailee Carey (Quincy, Mass.) finished as the runner up with a mark of 234.60.

Springfield ended the meet on a high note after Charlemagne, Amelia McKenzie (Charlton, Mass.), Ripp, and Magee won the 200 free relay in 1:39.88.

On Tuesday, November 5, Springfield will host Smith at 7 pm.

The Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2019-20 campaign and was bested by visiting Coast Guard, 180-107, on Saturday in Art Linkletter Natatorium.

Springfield opened up the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Owen Oldenburg (East Longmeadow, Mass.), Anthony Soares (Worcester, Mass.), James Chan (Hong Kong), and Sean Harnish (Middlebury, Conn.) produced a 1:39.93.

Chan picked up two wins in his first collegiate meet as he touched first in the 200 free in 1:43.04 and later cruised to a win in the 100 fly in 51.59.

Oldenburg completed the 100 back in 58.17 and totaled a 2:06.48 in the 200 back.   Soares completed the 100 breast with a 1:05.19 and Michael Allo (Newington, Conn.) raced the 200 breast in a time of 2:26.02 and recorded a 2:14.42 in the 200 IM . In the 200 fly, Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) registered a 2:01.45, swam the 100 free in 50.41, and posted a 5:05.28 in the 500 free.  Harnish also delivered a 22.92 in the 50 free.

On the diving boards, Luca Brashear (Amherst, Mass.) won the three-meter with a score of 284.60 and also claimed first-place points on the one-meter with a 262.45.

In the final event of the afternoon, Chan, Dominic Marco (Bath, Maine), Jensen, and Harnish combined for a 1:30.43 in the 200 free relay.

Springfield will host both MIT and Trinity on November 9 at 1 pm.

Rhode Island’s 200-yard medley relay team of Grace Kennedy, Rebecca Younts, Caitlin Guccione and Maddie Horner won the opening event, setting the tone early as the Rams dominated Springfield College and Coast Guard in a tri-meet Saturday.

The Rams (3-0) defeated host Springfield College, 179-116, and knocked off Coast Guard, 186-109.

Rhode Island won 11 of 15 events, including total dominance in the diving events. In the 1-meter dive, freshman Marta Baumann led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Rams. Senior Alyssa Campone, senior Katy Evans and sophomore Fallon Pfeifer led Rhody, which claimed six of the top seven spots in the event.

It was Evans winning the 3-meter dive, followed by Springfield College junior Bailee Carey. The next six finishers were Rams, as URI again took six of the top seven scores.

Standouts From the Pool

  • Senior Sabrina Anderson won the 1000-yard freestyle, edging Coast Guard’s Josie McGuire by 1.74 seconds in an exciting finish.
  • Sophomore Zoe Sheridan also won in close fashion in the 200-yard freestyle, just out-touching Coast Guard’s Emily Benson in the 200-yard freestyle. Sheridan had a time of 1:59.85, compared to 2:00.26 for Benson.
  • Freshman Julia Renna and sophomore Kristin Johnson gave the Rams a first- and third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, respectively.
  • Renna won multiple events for the second straight meet, as she also took first in the 200-yard backstroke.
  • The Rams dominated the 100-yard breaststroke, as junior Rebecca Younts, freshman Aimee Garcia, junior Brooke Kelley and senior Cassidy Fries were the top four finishers.
  • Younts got her second victory of the day when she took the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:30.70, just .08 seconds ahead of Springfield’s Lefteri Roba.
  • Senior Caitlin Guccione had a strong performance in the 200-yard butterfly, beating the entire field by more than five seconds.
  • Guccione posted a winning time of 2:12.46. The next closest finisher had a time of 2:17.54.
  • Guccione was the third multi-event winner for Rhode Island, thanks to her win in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Shauna Killane and Mackenna Dunn followed her to the wall, giving Rhody a 1-2-3 finish.

What’s Next
The Rams open the home portion of their season when they host Providence and Sacred Heart at the Tootell Aquatic Center on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
