Kingston, R.I. – The Providence College women’s swimming and diving team traveled to the University of Rhode Island on Tuesday, Nov. 6 to face URI and Sacred Heart. The Friars fell short to both teams in the double dual meet.

KINGSTON, R.I.– The Sacred Heart University Women’s Swimming and Diving team split its dual meet tonight as SHU defeated Providence for the first time in program history 144-135 while the Pioneers were edged by host Rhode Island by a combined score of 170-106. SHU will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 10 when travels to face Assumption. The meet begins at 11:00 a.m.
In strokes, senior Lauren Somers had an impressive day picking up victories in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle. In the 50, she touched the wall in 24.84 while in the 100 recorded a fast-paced time of 53.73. Sophomore Nicole Tingley continued her dominate season earning a victory in the 100 IM with a time of 1:01.89 just seconds ahead of teammate first-year Casey Barrett as she placed a time of 1:03.61. Junior Emily Peter and Nicole Tingley teamed up to take first and second in the 100 meter butterfly against Providence as Peter tallied a time of 1:00.01 and Tingley touched the wall at 1:00.44. The two placed second and fourth overall in the event. In the 500 meter freestyle, junior Margaret Flaherty took third with a time of 5:22.96.
In relays, the Pioneers took first in the 200 medley relay as the quad of Kelly Bartnett, Julia Pusateri, Nicole Tingley and Lauren Somers claimed a time of 1:51.89. SHU also took second in the 200 freestyle relay as the foursome of Kelly Bartnett, Grace Bergstrom, Emily Peter and Lauren Somers clocked in with a time of 1:42.23.
Sophomore Molly Martin led the way for the Pioneers in diving events as she took first in the 1 meter dive against Providence and fourth overall with a score of 208.75.

How It Happened
Rhode Island improved to 5-0 by sweeping Providence and Sacred Heart in a tri-meet in the Tootell Aquatic Center Wednesday night. The Rams defeated Providence, 159-115, and knocked off Sacred Heart, 170-106. Sacred Heart beat Providence, 144-135.
Rhode Island won each of the first five events, building an early lead. The 200-yard medley relay team of Julia Renna, Rebecca Younts, Caitlin Guccione and Camryn Kreuscher got the night started with a win. The Rhody quartet finished in a time of 1:50.64, holding off Sacred Heart, which finished in a time of 1:51.89.
Victories for the Rams in 200-yard Freestyle, the 50-yard Backstroke, the 50-yard Breaststroke and the 100-yard Butterfly followed, allowing the Rams to go wire-to-wire with the lead. Overall, the Rams won nine out of the 15 events.
Standouts From the Pool
- Freshman Aimee Garcia won a pair of individual events, taking both the 200-yard Freestyle and the 500-yard Freestyle.
- Garcia won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.86, just ahead of teammates Sabrina Anderson (1:58.23) and Zoe Sheridan (1:58.25) as the Rams took the top three spots.
- In the 500 freestyle, Garcia captured the win by finishing more than eight seconds ahead of the field. Anderson was second and senior Emma Grace Pecha placed fourth.
- Freshman Julia Renna won the 50-yard backstroke, while sophomore Kristin Johnson finished third. Renna and sophomore Grace Kennedy finished second and third, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke.
- Rhode Island grabbed three of the top five spots in the 50-yard breaststroke. Junior Rebecca Younts won the race, while junior Brooke Kelley was second and senior Cassidy Fries was fifth.
- Kelley and Fries gave the Rams. a 1-2 finish in the in 100-yard breaststroke.
- Senior Caitlin Guccione won 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.48. She edged Sacred Heart’s Emily Peter (1:00.01) and teammate Mackenna Dunn (1:00.44).
- Rhode Island’s strength in the diving events continued. Senior Katy Evans, freshman Marta Baumann and senior Alyssa Campone swept the the top three spots in the 1-meter dive. Sophomore Fallon Pfeifer placed fifth to give the Rams. four of the first five spots.
- Campone led the way in the 3-meter dive, followed closely by Evans in second and and junior Cameron Murray.

The Rams are back at home Saturday when they host Massachusetts Saturday, Nov. 9. The meet begins at 12 p.m.
