Two women broke Short Course Meters (25m) National Records during the two-day Latvian Winter Championships held Friday and Saturday in the capital of Riga.
The first of the records came from Gabriela Nikitina in the women’s 100 freestyle, when she swam a 56.32. That broke her own record of 56.42 set in 2012.
The 21-year old sprint freestyler hadn’t been a best time in the 100 (in short course or long course) since the summer of 2012 before snapping the drought on Friday. She narrowly missed another best time in the 50 free, when she swam a 25.65 – just a tenth short of another spritn record.
The second record came from the legs of Alona Ribakova, who swam 2:26.43 in the 200 breaststroke to skim just under her own mark of 2:26.47. With the result, she also broke her own Meet Record, done a year ago.
