Rick Curl’s Legacy Replaced With a Set of Initials

The Curl Burke Swim Club, embattled after owner and founder Rick Curl was accused of paying $150,000 to a swimmer to not disclose details of a relationship with an underage swimmer.

The club will now go by just its initials, “CUBU,” as its full name. This briefer moniker was often used in colloquial conversation as things were, but the decision announced to the team on Thursday will hope to persevere some reputation of a club that, in the pool, has been one of the most successful in US history.

Those close to the team report that swimmers were told to no longer wear anything that had the full “Curl Burke” name on it, with at least one coach telling adult members of the team to burn their Curl Burke gear. The frustration by those within the organization not at fault is fairly clear.

We reached out to Curl Burke for comment on the pending rebranding, but received no response.

The email sent out to parents by Rob Washburn, forwarded to SwimSwam by a former swimmer, includes the following decisions that were made by the club:

-The name Curl Burke Swim Club has been terminated effective immediately.

-Effective immediately no Curl Burke attire should be worn at any time.

-For the four remaining meets this summer, sectionals, Jr. nationals, and the US Open swimmers will compete as CUBU NOT Curl Burke Swim Club. Zone swimmers will wear all zone apparel ONLY.

-Head Coaches have been and are continuing to meet to discuss the total rebranding, i.e. new name, new logo and new business model.

-I will be the head coach of the Germantown site. All inquiries/question should be directed to me.

-Our entire Germantown coaching staff has been retained.

-I have secured all our pool time for the upcoming season

EXCLUSIVE: Attorney for Victim of Rapist Coach Rick Curl Challenges USA Swimming on Tonight’s ‘Emergency Hearing’
Published August 1st, 2012, Uncategorized

Below is the full text of an email sent this morning by B. Robert Allard, attorney for Kelley Davies-Currin, to Richard Young of the Bryan Cave law firm, outside counsel for USA Swimming.

Dear Mr. Young:

The purpose of this correspondence is twofold.

First, although Ms. Currin remains of the position that her “testimony” during the “hearing” set for tonight is not necessary, she nevertheless would like me, as her counsel, to participate via the telephone. Please provide me with the appropriate details including the call-in number.

Second, I wanted to remind you that it is not without… Read more »

California Supreme Court to USA Swimming: Stop Hiding Documents in Sex Abuse Cases
Published July 29th, 2012, Uncategorized

On Friday the California Supreme Court refused USA Swimming’s request to consider an appeal of lower court decisions affirming that the organization must comply with discovery orders to release internal documents — including coach complaint files — in sex abuse lawsuits.

In the continuing under-the-media-radar developments in a child molestation scandal that is likely much wider-reaching than Penn State’s, this court ruling is of even more importance in light of last week’s news that Rick Curl, founder of the nearly 1,000-athlete-strong Curl-Burke Swim Club, paid ex-swimmer Kelley Currin (formerly Kelly Davies) and… Read more »

Did this accused event happen while Rick Curl was married? I had heard he pursued and married his current wife while she was pretty young also?

I was there at the very beginning of CUBU. Rick had no swimming background that I’m aware of, he cleaned pools. And Pete, he was a former water polo player. Rick and Pete were very close friends, Rick hired him when a job in the West did not work out.

There are plenty of teams in this area for kids to join, and frankly better coached. I would be spending my time finding a new team for my child. I cannot imagine spending one more dollar supporting that organization.

If you look at other teams with tenuous connections to CUBU, they are abandoning it as fast as they can. Dolan has made it clear he wants nothing to do with… Read more »

Better coached? If there are other teams that are better coached why is CUBU one of the best clubs in the country?!?! Once again, it sounds like you are another CUBU hater because of the success that they have!

A new name and logo will be decided upon before the short course season starts in September. The CUBU acronym will only be used for the rest of the summer to get the swimmers thru championship meets.

Support the RICK CURL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND. Pay your CUBU Session One fees by September 1, when the’re due. This is a travesty!
