Following the first night of swimming competition at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Australia leads the gold medal race, becoming the only nation to win multiple golds with their 2 wins in tonight’s finals session. Their first win came courtesy of Mack Horton in the men’s 400 freestyle, as Horton took down 2012 Olympic champ Sun Yang to win the race in 3:41.55 to nab the Aussies’ first gold in that race since Thorpe won in 2004.
Closing the session with their second gold medal was the women’s 4×100 free relay team of Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell, and Cate Campbell. The women decimated the World Record to win the race, lowering the mark from a 3:32.29 to a 3:30.65.
In terms of overall medals, Team USA currently has the most with 3 total. In both the men’s and women’s 400 IM, the Americans got a silver medal, with fast swims out of Chase Kalisz and Maya DiRado. They also finished 2nd in the women’s 4×100 free relay with Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer, and Katie Ledecky.
