Thanks largely in part to the heroics of Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps, the United States asserted its dominance over the rest of the world with three more gold medals on the night.
First, Ledecky was on the shortest individual mission of her life, battling with an upstart Sarah Sjostrom for the 200 free gold. It was Ledecky, with a furious final 5 meters, who inched ahead for first. She, still, has yet to be defeated in an individual race in international competition since her break-out 400 free from London.
Phelps, one event later, was engaged in another insanely tight race in the 200 fly. The G.O.A.T. was victorious as well, winning the race by just four hundredths. To cap off the night, Phelps along with Townley Haas, Ryan Lochte, and Conor Dwyer obliterated the field in the 4×200 free relay.
Also earning a medal for the U.S. was Maya Dirado, snagging a bronze in the 200 IM. The United States now owns a whopping 18 swimming medals– no other country has more than 5.
