Organizers of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games announced last week that they have surpassed the 50% mark in completion of the Olympic and Paralympic Villages for the Games that are now 681 days away.
Construction on the village started in July 2012, and the projected completion is in the “first half of 2016.”
Since unconfirmed rumors swirled last year, mostly in British papers, that Olympic organizers were looking at backup plans for Rio, the pace of construction has accelerated and frequent updates have been given about the progress of the building.
17 of the 31 buildings are completely erected, with the rest on target to be finished by the end of 2014. 2015 will be spent working on internal finishing, and then the “overlay” will be done that will put the complex into Olympic mode. After the Olympics, it will be reverted to a residential complex. The things being added specifically for the Olympics are a medical center, a 5,000-seat cafeteria, and a gym.
More stats about the village:
- 6,500 workers are involved with the project, which will increase to 8,000 by year’s end.
- The 31 buildings will have a total of 3,604 apartments, 10,160 bedrooms, 10,150 bathrooms, and over 18,000 beds.
- About 10,000 people will work in the Olympic Village’s operation.
