Rio Security Forces Prepare with Simulated Terrorist Attack

SIMULATED.  NOT REAL.

Once again, SIMULATED; no real terrorist attacks have taken place in Rio this summer, and hopefully, thanks in part to preparations such as these, that bit of the status quo will remain the same.

The very fact that Rio is conducting drills and simulations to test their emergency operatives for such a calamity may be disquieting to some people, but in reality, these types of drills are commonplace before major international sporting events.  Cristiano Barbosa Sampaio, the General Coordinator of Public Security for the upcoming Olympic Games, dubbed the simulation a success.

The simulation took place on a train in the Deodoro region of Rio de Janeiro, which will host events including the modern pentathlon, rugby, basketball, and equestrian, among others.

At present, Rio is on a “Yellow Alert,” meaning that no  specific threat is perceived; however, “the attention and level of response” by security personnel needs to be increased beyond what normal circumstances would require.

If you would like to brush up on your Portuguese, the video below shows a glimpse of the simulation that took place on the train in Deodoro.
