Today Rio 2016 unveiled photos and extensive information on the Olympic Village in celebration of Olympic Day. Olympic day commemorates the anniversary of the IOC and hopes to encourage many around the world to become more active.
On July 24, the first group of athletes will move into the village where they will stay for the duration of the Games. The Olympic and Paralympic Village consists of 31 apartment buildings, some as high as 17 stories. There are a total of 3,604 apartments in the village, which will be home to more than 17,000 athletes and team officials. There are also 6,000 Paralympic athletes that will be competing in the Games who will be staying in the village.

The village aims to be more than just a place where the athletes sleep, and will provide a place to relax, work out, and access services without having to leave the site. Included in the village is laundry service, a florist, convenience stores, a bank, a post office, a ticket booth, and a hairdresser and beauty salon.
The village will also have a huge dining hall where the athletes will be able to re-fuel for the competition. The main dining hall will serve more than 60,000 meals a day during the Games and can fit five jumbo jets.
A gym will also be open for the athletes to use 24/7, as well as a multi-faith center that will cater any religious needs the athletes may have.
Brazil has named basketball star Janeth Arcain as the mayor of the village. Her responsibilities will include welcoming the athletes and officials to the village and ensuring that everything runs smoothly so that the athletes can perform at the highest level. Arcane has won a silver and bronze medal as a part of the Brazilian Olympic basketball team.
I see they have a nice welcoming pond for the mosquitos to breed in. Not much closet space in the bedroom either. Surely these apartments have kitchens? They are selling them as condos after the games are over last I read. The lack of tv wouldn’t bother me as long as there was fast and reliable wifi.

Are there going to be any measures to prevent Zika (like mosquito nets)? From a layman’s perspective it doesn’t seem like Brazil has done much to mitigate that risk, to the point where I’d be quite concerned if I was an athlete competing in Rio…
I haven’t heard of anything specific, but you would think they would have mosquito traps everywhere along the perimeter of the facilities. Each trap can take care of about 1 acre of land and they aren’t very expensive, usually around $200 a piece.

Me neither, but the average temperature in July for Rio is 63 degrees Fahrenheit, so unless something amazing happens with the weather, snow shouldn’t be a factor 🙂
