On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.
The 70th day of the Rio torch relay saw the torch take a day off, as it went for a boat ride around Florianopolis. Check out the video below:
The torch continued it’s journey through Santa Catarina on day 71, hitting six different cities along the eastern coast of the state. It began in Biguaçu and ultimately made its way up to Blumenau 128 km north.
Biguaçu has great ocean access as it borders the South Atlantic Ocean, and is known for its seafood cuisine. It is very close to the state capital of Florianopolis. It then travelled 60 km north to Balneário Camboriú, which is a major beach resort in the state. It is famous for the cable car that links the city’s central beach and the beach of Laranjeiras.
The torch continued north to Itajai and then Ilhota, both located slightly north of Balneário Camboriú. Itajai is known for having the second largest port in Brazil and its many beautiful beaches, while Ilhota is much smaller and is known as one of the few Belgian colonies existing in Brazil.
From Ilhota it travelled just 20 km west to Gaspar, a municipality with about 64,000 people. It continued 20 more km to the west to Blumenau, known for its annual Oktoberfest of Blumenau that attracts over a million tourists per year.
