Robbie Dickson, Distance Specialist from Delaware Swim Team, Commits to Penn State

Robbie Dickson, a national-level distance swimmer from Newark, Delaware, has made a verbal commitment to join the Penn State Nittany Lions’ Class of 2019.

“I took three trips, ending with PSU last weekend. I fell in love with the school. I feel like I can achieve all of my academic and athletic goals there.”

The Salesianum School senior has helped lead his team to three consecutive Delaware state high school swimming and diving titles. As a freshman he was ninth in the 200 free and third in the 500; in 10th grade he finished third and second, respectively; as a junior he was third in the 200 and won the 500.

Dickson participated at the 2014 Open Water Nationals in California this past summer. He was the 16th 18-and-under in the men’s 10K with 1:59:19, and the 12th 18-and-under in the men’s 5K with 57:31. He is a true distance swimmer in that the longer the event, the better he does. His fastest times are:

1650y free: 15:32.96        1500m free: 16:03.35
1000y free: 9:22.22          800m free: 8;27.56
500y free: 4:33.50            400m free: 4:04.94
400y IM: 4:07.05               400m IM: 4:39.49

All four of the SCY times listed above would have made the Nittany Lions’ 2013-14 top ten list; Dickson has a whole year to improve on them and be an even greater asset to the Penn State roster.

Correction: Times would be top 10 last year but not all time. PSU web page has a history tab that connects you to the yearbook which lists all time top 10s.

Congrats young man on your commitment to PSU.

A 4:07 SCY 400 IM cracks PSU’s all-time top ten? I can’t find their all-time top ten on the team website, just the year-by-year top tens.
