Robert Finke of St. Petersburg Aquatics in Florida has broken the 17-18 U.S. National Age Group Record in the 1000 yard free, swimming an 8:45.50 in Thursday evening’s timed finals session. That breaks the old record of 8:46.40 set by PJ Ransford in 2015. Ransford, currently a senior at Michigan, finished 6th in the mile at last year’s NCAA Championship meet.

Finke’s previous lifetime best was an 8:49.71, and he’s been under 9 minutes now in 4 different swims.

Even at just 18 years old, the time now ranks Finke as the 12th-fastest performer in history in the event. The all-time best is an 8:33.93 done by then-Texas Longhorn Clark Smith in 2015.

Splits by 100 (200 split):

  • 53.32
  • 53.53 (1:46.85)
  • 53.24

Finke is a member of the U.S. National Team and represented the United States in the 1500 meter free at the 2017 World Championships. He placed 21st in that race.

Have their been any rumblings about adding the 1000 to the NCAA schedule since the 800/1500 got added to the Olympic schedule?

A couple of years ago Fred Lewis at St Pete Aquatics had another swimmer at this same meet (FL Sr Champs) who set the American Record in 1000 Free – Robert Margalis (Stephanie’s older brother).
