Romania’s Robert Glinta reset his own Romanian National Record in the 200 backstroke, putting up a time of 1:51.92 to get under 1:52 for the first time. His previous record stood at 1:52.28, set just last month in November. This is the third time he has broken the record in the last month and a half, as he first broke it in late October at the Tokyo stop of the World Cup in 1:52.97.
This is Glinta’s third record of the week, setting the 50 back (23.64) and 100 back (50.37) records as well here in Windsor. He finished 7th in the 100 and in a tie for 11th in the 50. His swim this morning advanced him to the final tonight in 8th position. His improvement over the last two years is evident, as at the 2014 Championships in Doha he finished 31st, 22nd and 21st respectively in the backstroke events.
Along with his SCM Romanian Records, Glinta also holds the 50 and 100 back long course records along with the Junior World Record in the short course 100 back. That was set last December at the European Championships. He is now 19, and therefore ineligible to break World Junior Records anymore.
The Romanian had his first Olympic experience this past summer, advancing to the final of the men’s 100 back finishing 8th. He also finished 18th in the 200 back.
