A pair of hotly-contested meets saw Robinson and Woodson split the VHSL Occoquan Region 6C Championship titles on the weekend, with both the girls’ and boys’ meet decided by single-digit margins.
The Robinson girls outscored Woodson by eight points to win the title after falling by 100 points last year, while the Woodson boys (327.5) got the better of Robinson (322.5) after things went the other way in 2021.
GIRLS RECAP
South County High School senior Katherine Helms had a phenomenal showing, sweeping her individual events with new Occoquan Region Records in the 50 free (22.78) and 100 free (49.57).
Helms, an NC State commit who won the 100 and 200 free, also led off South County’s record-setting 200 medley relay in 25.33, as they won by over two seconds in 1:45.61. Helms closed out her standout performance by anchoring the South County 400 free relay in 48.39 as the team took second to Robinson (3:28.76) in 3:31.56.
Also doubling up individually was Justice High School’s Emma Redman. Redman, the 100 breast runner-up last season, won that event in 1:03.67, and added a second win in the 100 fly (55.81).
Leading Robinson to the overall victory was Rachel Jones, who won the 200 IM (2:04.69), and Aleigha Scherber, who topped the 500 free (5:08.37). Jones and Scherber also finished 2-3 in the 100 back, with Woodson’s Jillian Ferrari earning a dominant record-setting victory in 55.07.

BOYS RECAP
For the second straight year, Woodson’s Aiken Do doubled up individually, though he did so in different events than last season.
Do, a Virginia Tech commit, broke a pair of Region Records en route to winning both thr 100 breaststroke (54.85) and 200 IM (1:50.99) after sweeping the 50 and 100 free in 2021.
Do also provided key legs on Woodson’s winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.
In the 200 medley, he split 24.78 on breaststroke as the Cavaliers (1:33.97) took down Lake Braddock (1:34.72), and in the 200 free, the senior anchored in a blazing 20.30 as Woodson won by 1.80 seconds.
Also winning two individual events was South County’s Zac Leith, who came out on top in the 100 back (50.17) and 200 free (1:42.21), with his combined margin of victory coming in at a just 37 one-hundredths of a second.
TJ’s Beck Hastings, who was the runner-up to Leith in the 200 free at 1:42.46, tied for the third-highest male point total with 37, also winning the 500 free in 4:39.09. That swim set a new Region Record.
Titans senior Emil LaSida was other to score 37 points, winning the 50 free (21.12) while taking second to Leith in the 100 back (50.29).
