Ronald Dalmacio Breaks NAG Record in 11-12 50m Back by a Half Second

Rose Bowl Aquatics’ 12-year-old Ronald Dalmacio broke the National Age Group record in the 50 meter backstroke tonight at the 2016 California June Age Group Championships, posting 27.88 in a time trial swim to beat the mark by over half a second.

The old record was a 28.41 set by Kevin Kyi earlier this month. Kyi’s swim was monumental at the time, taking down the seven-year-old 28.49 set by now-Clemson baseball star Seth Beer.

Record progression:

  • 2009: 28.49, Seth Beer
  • June 5, 2016: 28.41, Kevin Kyi (.03% improvement from ’09 record)
  • June 18, 2016: 27.88, Ronald Dalmacio (2.2% improvement from ’09 record)

Dalmacio also holds National Age Group records in the 10 and under 50m back (30.95), the 10 and under 100m back (1:07.40), the 10 and under 50y back (26.91), the 10 and under 100y back (58.62), the 10 and under 100 IM (1:01.21), and the Rose Bowl 10 and under 200 medley relay.

Dalmacio’s record-breaking swim today came in a time trial. He swam the prelims of the event in 29.28 and the finals in 28.42.

He narrowly missed the National Age Group record in the 100m back yesterday, winning the event in 1:00.40, just .07 off Vinny Marciano‘s 1:00.33 mark from 2014. Dalmacio only recently turned 12, so he will have many more chances to make his mark on the 11-12 record lists.

Congrats. First 11/12 US boy ever under 28 in the 50 back.
His 100 back progression is also huge in only few months. He was in 1.06.20 last year. 1.02.04 last April. And boom 1.00.40 yesterday. No doubt he will quickly crush the minute barrier.
The 3 NAG records of my favorite US age group boy swimmer Destin Lasco should not resist the wave. 2.15.33 in the 200 IM/4.51.03 in the 400 IM/2.10.39 in the 200 back.
I believed the Lasco/Marciano generation would stay a long time at the top of the record books. No. Swimming is definitely going faster.
What is more impressive is that Mr Dalmacio turned 12 only in May. He’s gonna put… Read more »

What a swim; such a big chunk of time to take off the record in just a few weeks!

Side note: does anyone know much about Vinny Marciano? Feel like I remember hearing about all of his NAG records in the 11-12 group but not much buzz since aging up.
