Rose Bowl Aquatics Downs Another Pair of NAG Records at Intrasquad Meet

After breaking the 15-16 boys 800 free relay and 17-18 mixed 400 medley relay national age group (NAG) records on Friday, Rose Bowl Aquatics set another pair of NAG relay records over the weekend, this time in the 15-16 boys 200 free and 400 free relays. Rose Bowl Aquatics is currently hosting a multiple-day intrasquad meet for its athletes.

The same quartet of Ronald Dalmacio, William Kim, Zach Larrick, and Rex Maurer that set the 800 free relay record combined to finish the 200 free relay in 1:22.10, .41 faster than the previous record that was set in 2018 by the Mason Manta Rays. That 2018 relay featured a pair of 2021 NCAA medalists in Adam Chaney and Carson Foster.

Splits Comparison

Ronald Dalmacio – 21.04 Adam Chaney – 20.70
William Kim – 20.37 Scott Shepherd – 21.24
Zach Larrick – 20.68 Jacob McDonald – 20.76
Rex Maurer – 20.01 Carson Foster – 19.81

Like their 800 free relay on Friday, the deciding factor in the team’s record was the middle legs of the relay, with both Kim and Larrick splitting faster than the previous record holders. While Dalmacio and Maurer were both out split by the now NCAA medalists, Kim was nearly a second faster than Scott Shepherd was in 2018 when the previous record was set.

In the 400 free relay, the team adjusted the order, with Kim leading the relay off and Dalmacio, Larrick, and Maurer following him. They broke the record set by the Zionsville Swim Club team of Charlie Korne, Will Raches, Jack Donovan, and Will Modglin in December of 2020 by nearly a second.

Rose Bowl Aquatics, 2021 Zionsville Swim Club, 2020
William Kim – 45.19 Charlie Krone – 46.10
Ronald Dalmacio – 45.16 Will Raches – 45.05
Zach Larrick – 45.17 Jack Donovan – 45.28
Rex Maurer – 44.05 Will Modglin – 44.10
2:59.57 3:00.53

Despite the change in relay order, Kim was once again the deciding factor, out splitting Krone’s 46.10 by nearly a second on the first leg of the relay. The swim was also a large best time for Kim, whose previous lifetime best was 45.76 from March of this year. The only member of the relay who didn’t out split the previous NAG was Dalmacio, who was only .1 off of Will Raches’ split from the old record.

Rose Bowl’s anchor leg is a very recent addition to the team, as Maurer competed in Illinois as recently as last March. In Illinois, he was the 2020 runner-up at the IHSA Boys State Championship meet in the 500 free, touching in 4:26.35. His anchor leg of 20.01  on the 200 free relay was well faster than his lifetime best in the individual 50 free, a 20.96 from the St. George Sectionals meet in March of this year. His time anchoring the 400 free relay was also significantly faster than his lifetime best in the event, a 45.39 from April. Along with Kim and Larrick, he competes for Loyola High School, with the school’s section championship currently slated for the end of May. California has already canceled their state championship meets that had been scheduled for the first weekend of June.

That’s because Perservance and Ingenuity were cheering them on from Mars. This area is near JPL.
