What is interesting is this kid came from Chicago area which probably had good swimming programs as well. I think the parents were transferred to JPL. His explains why a kid from Chicago would moved to a more expensive area like Pasadena the parents were relocated to JPL or some other job.

I’d imagine it’s probably due to his mother’s position as associate head coach of USC, not JPL.

Rex’s dad won ncaa’s in the 50 free before getting his degree. And he might be the slowest in the family when all is said and done. Wonderful guy who I got to watch along with his brother in high school. Feels good to see a family of good guys (guys includes women) doing so well.

Rex looks to be the premier Boy’s swimmer of the high school class of 2023. Strong family ties to Stanford with both parents Stanford grads and older brother Luke a highly recruited swimmer when the family lived in Illinois and now an impact swimmer on the current Stanford Roster. Mom, Lea, was Stanford HC at one time but is now an assistant at USC. The Maurer brothers swim for Rose Bowl Aquatics coached by Jeff Julian, former USC swimmer and recently an assistant at USC. Jeff’s son Trenton is an elite D1 swimmer at Cal. Rex attends Loyola High School in the downtown Los Angeles are just a few miles from the USC campus and the LA Coliseum “home base”… Read more »

I wondered if he was the son of Lea Maurer, currently assistant coach at USC, former Stanford head coach and former world and olympic gold medalist. Thank you for answering a question I was gonna ask.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to train with Luke and Rex when they lived here in IL for a while. Really made practice fun and challenging and we all got better at the end of the day. Happy to see Rex doing very well.

It’s incredible to see the name John Mykkanen who nearly 40 years ago went 3:53…think about that for a minute!

And the year later he won the silver medal in the 400 free in Los Angeles.

Family of swimmers. His daughter Courtney swam at Cal recently. And we have 2 other Mykkanens this week in Irvine with Christopher on the men’s side and Cameron on the women’s side.

Bobo sometimes I think I’m a great swim nerd but then you come up with deep cuts like this. You’ve got just an insane depth of knowledge
