Rowan Men & Women Sweep 2020 Metropolitan Championships

WOMEN

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rowan University women’s swimming & diving team won the Metropolitan Championships for the third straight year. The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.

The Profs finished first out of 15 schools.  Corinne Finkbinder was named the Diver of the Meet and Jordan McChesney earned Rookie of the Meet.  Elise Blaschke was chosen the Coach of the Meet in her first season.

Finkbinder totaled 440.43 points in the three-meter diving for first place and Klaudia Rzotkiewicz took third place (350.94).  Carlee Timmins won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:17.85.  She improved on her NCAA B cut time of 17:29.39. The NCAA B cut stands at 17:33.69.

The 400 freestyle took second place with a time of 3:32.88. Abigail Brous, Elizabeth O’Brien, Veronica Alferez and McChesney made up the relay.

In the 200 backstroke, Brianna Gutierrez came in second (2:08.38) in the 200 backstroke and she was third (18:08.35) in the 1650 freestyle. Alex Bambrick finished third (2:09.36) in the 200 backstroke and Taylor DeGennaro was fifth (2:10.21).

McChesney came in second (52.58) in the 100 freestyle followed by O’Brien, fourth (53.75) and Brous, fifth (53.84).  Emily Kopchick took second (2:26.19) in the 200 breaststroke and Emily LaBenski was third (2:26.74).

Alferez swam 2:09.77 in the 200 butterfly for third place. She broke the school record of 2:10.52 by Anne O’Gorman (February 2011).  Bailey Howarth finished sixth (2:29.03) in the 200 breaststroke.  Jordan Jones took seventh (2:19.26) in the 200 butterfly and Daria Mnich followed eighth (2:19.78).

In the 100 free, Nicole Harms had a 10^th place (54.05) while Megan Miller and Kylie Salerno were 11^th (54.73) and 13^th (55.19) respectively.

MEN

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rowan University men’s swimming & diving team took first place at the Metropolitan Championships.  The three-day meet was held at Rutgers University.

The championships included 13 teams.  Chad Shire was named the Diver of the Meet for the second straight season. He won the three-meter diving (540.39) and was second in the one-meter (471.57)

Kevin Gillooly was the winner in the 200 backstroke in 1:47.26, which improved on his Rowan record and NCAA B cut of 1:48.11.  Kevin Yanagisawa swam 1:49.99 in the 200 butterfly for first place. His time was better than the NCAA B cut (1:50.85).

The 400 freestyle relay swam 3:05.60 for second place.  Jake Kayati, Dylan Regan, Tyler McDonald and Gillooly were on the relay.

Matt Grubb came in second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:00.79.  His time was a NCAA B cut (2:04.80) and a new school mark.  The previous record (2:02.51) was held by Mike Simunek (February 2017). Greg Cann finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke with a NCAA B cut time of 2:04.28.

Regan touched second (45.79) in the 100 freestyle and Kayati was fifth (46.26).  Kayati also took fifth (1:54.66) in the 200 butterfly and Joe Rucci was sixth (1:55.06). Matt Smits had a fifth place (16:25,81) in the 1650 freestyle.

Kyle Printon finished seventh (1:55.06) in the 200 backstroke and Alex Sukach followed eighth (1:55.91).  Jack Freeman took eighth (1:56.60) in the 200 butterfly while Rocco Evangelista followed ninth (1:55.82) and Tanner Debus was 12^th (1:59.69).

In the 100 free, Dominick Sheppard tied for ninth (46.34), McDonald took 11^th (46.60) and Matt Maretic was 13^th (46.86).  Matt Schillaci came in 14^th (1:58.72) in the 200 backstroke and Smits was 16^th (2:00.44).
