Russia Names 32 Swimmers to 2012 Olympic Team

As their Junior squad was preparing to dominate in Belgium, the Russian federation has announced a 32-swimmer roster that will be among the biggest in the world coming to London.

There were a few swimmers who were up-in-the-air coming into this formal announcement, but the Russian Federation decided to take Ekaterina Andreeva in the women’s 200 IM, Yegor Degtyarev in the women’ s 800 free, and Irina Bespalova as an individual 100 butterfly entry in addition to her medley relay swim. The Russians have also added Maria Gromova as a prelims swimmer for the women’s 400 free relay, though with how well Mariya Baklakova is swimming this week at the European Juniors, she may lose that spot altogether (or be joined by another prelims-only swimmer).

The most notable entry on this roster, perhaps, is the addition of Artem Lubuzov to the men’s 200 free. He replaces Evgeny Lagunov, who scratched his only individual event to focus on the 400 and 800 free relays.

Vlad Morozov wanted to swim for USA. Is it still current? It would be a major force for the american 4X100 free relay in the future. But imagine the world championships in Russia in 2015! It would be a new cold war! It’s an interesting story to follow.

I think Morozov will stay as a Russian if the Russians finish ahead of the americans in the 4×100 free.

It would be a curious reason to become or not american. If he wants to swim for USA it’s not a result which must change that.
