Russian Olympic Team Members Make Final Rio Tuneup at Russian Cup

2016 RUSSIAN CUP

A large portion of the Russian Olympic swim team will be competing tomorrow, July 17th and Monday, July 18th during the 2016 Russian Cup.

The Russian Cup, which is set to be hosted in Moscow, will serve as a final tuneup for Russian Olympians before the beginning of the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Games officially begin in less than three weeks, on August 5th.

On the women’s side, names like Veronika Popova and Daria Ustinova will be competing. Popova is Russia’s top 200 freestyler– she’s been 1:55.97 this season, which ranks her 11th in the world. Ustinova is one of Russia’s top young stars, who has broken World Junior records in both 100 and 200 backstroke events.

Some top level male Russian stars will also be swimming over the next couple days, including 200 breast WJR-holder Anton Chupkov. Two-time 2015 World University Games butterfly gold medalist Evgeny Koptelov will compete, and he’ll look to crack the World top 10 in either butterfly race.

Among other big names competing will be Svetlana ChimrovaNatalia LovtsovaArina Openshyeva, and Danila Izotov. The full list and more information is available (in Russian) here.

Prelims will start at 10am Moscow time, while finals will begin at 6pm.

I’d like to see a tune-up for the women’s 400 medley relay.
Ustinova, Efimova, Chimrova, Andreeva – only 4 doping violations between the 4 of them, so why not?
