Russian Swimming Federation Releases 2016 Worlds Selection Criteria

The Russian Swimming Federation has released its time standards and selection criteria for their 2016 Short Course World Championships in Windsor, Canada.

Athletes will be selected based on their performances at the Russian Swimming Championships in Kazan from November 5th through the 9th. However, athletes who are training abroad can also be considered for the team if they meet the qualifying standard in the 2016-2017 short course season.

The full selection standards are linked here, but below is a summary of the six-point selection system, to result in a 32-member team:

  1. Athletes who place 1st or 2nd in each individual event at the Russian Swimming Championships and hit the qualifying standard automatically make the team. (If there is a tie for second, and both make the standard, the swimmer with the faster semifinal performance will make the team.)
  2. Athletes who train abroad can be considered if they make the qualifying standard (or if their SCY performance multiplied by 1.0936 meets the standard) at a sanctioned meet during the 2016-2017 short course season.
  3. If fewer than two athletes swim the qualifying standard, then at the suggestion of the head coach, up to 4 junior athletes (born in 1999 or later) can be selected for the team.
  4. Swimmers who place 1st through 4th at the Russian Championships in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle will be selected for the relay events.
  5. If all athletes fail to make the qualifying standards in the 50 and 100 meter distances of the stroke events, then the winners of those events will be included for the medley relays.
