Russians Double the Number of Olympic Qualifiers on Day 3 of Trials

2016 RUSSIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS / OLYMPIC TRIALS

After the first two days of competition at the Russian Olympic Trials only four swimmers had made the qualifying times for Rio. On day three the Russians more than doubled that number with five athletes booking their tickets to Rio.

Aleksandr Krasnykh had already qualified for the Russian Olympic team in the 400 freestyle earlier in the competition. On day three Krasnykh added the 200 freestyle to his schedule in Rio taking the men’s 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.00. He was the only man in the event to go under the Olympic qualifying time of 1:47.01.

There were two qualifiers in both the women’s and men’s 100 backstroke.

In the women’s event both Daria K Ustinova and Anastasia Fesikova finished under the Olympic qualifying time of 1:00.05. Ustinova won the event in a time of 59.78, tying her lifetime best which she put up at the 2014 Russian Championships. Fesikova hit the wall in a time of 59.91 well off her textile lifetime best of 58.97.

In the men’s event both Evgeny Rylov and Grigory Tarasevich went under the Olympic qualifying standard of 53.99.

Rylov won the event in a time of 53.04 beating his best time of 53.14, which he recorded at the 2015 World Championships where he finished seventh.

Tarasevich finished second in a time of 53.20. Tarasevich has a season’s best of 53.03, which currently ranks sixth in the world. He also swam this event in Kazan, but failed to reach the final.
