Ryan Harty of the Greenwood Memorial Swim Club lifted his already-soaring stock over the weekend at the New England Swimming LSC Championships with four new LSC Records and lifetime bests.
Harty won the maximum-allowable 6 individual events at the meet:
- 100 back – 1st – Harty 46.26, 2nd – Gregory Dematteo 48.92, 3rd – Joseph Turk, 50.02
- 200 back – 1st – Harty, 1:40.90, 2nd – Turk, 1:47.16, 3rd – Connar Patterson, 1:48.05
- 100 breast – 1st – Harty, 55.02, 2nd – Drew Modrov, 55.96, 3rd – Brian Poon, 56.20
- 200 fly – 1st – Harty, 1:46.74, 2nd – Matthew Grauslys, 1:47.43, 3rd – Maxwell Miranda, 1:48.42
- 200 IM – 1st – Harty, 1:44.38, 2nd – Poon, 1:48.67, 3rd – Miranda, 1:51.50
- 400 IM – 1st – Harty, 3:44.82, 2nd – Poon, 3:50.65, 3rd – Jarrett Jones, 3:51.64
For Harty, that breaks the New England LSC Record in the 100 back for 15-18’s, the 200 IM for 15-18’s (by three seconds), the 200 back open record, and the 200 fly open record.
He also moved into the top-10 of all-time nationally in the 17-18 age group in two events, now ranking 6th in the 100 back, 6th in the 200 back. He adds to that rankings of 12th in the 200 IM and 14th in the 400 IM.
Harty’s backstroke times, while absolutely spectacular, were somewhat of a known quantity for him. The improvements he made in the 100 breaststroke and the IM events especially (he dropped four seconds in the 200 and over five in the 400) will have Texas men’s head coach Eddie Reese licking-his-proverbial-chops.
Other highlights of the meet:
- 2004 Olympic relay gold medalist Rhi Jeffrey had a stellar meet that included a 49.18 in the 100 yard free, just missing her 48.83 done at Winter Nationals. That swim broke the all-time New England Swimming open-age, open-resident record in the 100 yard free that was set by the great Jill Sterkel in 1981 (in other words, fastest 100 yard free ever swum in New England by a woman). Jeffrey is having a resurgence this season as she continues to look for another Olympic bid at 28-years old, and is swimming as well as she has in short course in 8 years.
- Former Auburn swimmer Drew Modrov broke the Open New England All-Comers’ Record in the 50 free with a 19.88, breaking the previous record of 19.91 set by Robin Learny at Nationals in 1981.
- Liam Egan won the men’s 500 free (4:23.52) and 1650 free (15:13.10).

Great weekend for Mr Harty!
Has someone news about his sister Kaitlin? I don’t see her name in the results. Any time for her since last June 27. I still have in mind her impressive 200 back win at the 2013 Charlotte Grand Prix in 2.10 at 15. Is she injured?
I add to your highlights 13-year-old Will Barao who swam very fast in freestyle.
Fastest times in the nation for a 13-year-old boy so far.
1.42.32 in the 200.
4.35.89 in the 500.
15.43.61 in the 1650.
And also a pretty good 4.06 in the 400 IM. Second fastest time so far.
No time for her since last June 27.
And last time she swam fast was in December 2013.
I heard from Kaitlin’s coach that she got a disorder called SMA syndrome about 10 months ago, she’s very sick apparently and hasn’t been able to swim! 🙁
Those times make him a solid bet to final in three events at NCAA champs in 2016
