Ryan Lochte Appears on NBC’s “Today” to Talk Weight Loss, Family Life

American swimmer Ryan Lochte made an appearance on NBC’s Today this week to discuss his “road to redemption” and recent weight loss. Lochte discusses his depression after the Rio gas station incident and his “destructive” use of alcohol, both of which he’s talked about at length before.

Lochte reiterates that his wife, Kayla Reid, and his children have helped him reclaim his life (and his focus on swimming). He also, however, says that when his daughter was born, his training started to “slip away,” and he started eating a lot of fast food, leading him to swim 22 pounds ‘overweight’ at US Nationals.

This piggy-backs off an Instagram post Lochte made this week, where he talked about the weight he’s lost since winning the US National title this summer in the 200 IM in his first meet back from suspension. Lochte, now 35-years old, says that he’s swimming times in practice that he are similar to what he did when he was at his peak in 2012. Lochte won 5 medals at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Lochte will turn 36 during the 2020 Olympic Games, and if he were to win a medal, he would be one of the oldest to ever do so in swimming. Anthony Ervin is the oldest-ever Olympic gold medalist in an individual swimming event, winning one in 2016 at 35.

As the US host network for the Olympic Games, NBC frequently features swimmers on its flagship Today show.

What a great irony remembering the now disgraced MATT LAUER being the one to skewer Lochte post Rio. Ryan is a good soul who badly needed to grow up, and also face issues with alcohol. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Some people NEVER grow up. We are all here to learn, and are on different paths/time schedules. There is nobody I will be rooting harder for in 2020.

I agree 100% Swimming is a better sport when Ryan Lochte is racing fast.

A living legend. Glad he’s back on track and wishing his family the best. Good luck in 2020!

Gaining 22 lbs during mid-30s is ominous for when he hit the big 50!!! The over/under for Ryan in 2034 is 256 lbs and 40% body fat! Add some Twinkies to the fast food diet and I will take the over bet!

I’m surprised there was no mention about his practice with the Longhorns last month.

Speaking of the Olympics, this week the Paris 2024 Olympic Committee unveiled their logo for the Paris 2024 games. I like it, but some detractors have compared it to the logo for a “hookup dating app.” What do you think? Do you like it?

I like it . It could be a lady’s head or a flame . Clever . I don’t know the dating app symbol but I don’t think it matters

It’s a modern representation of Marianne, who is the symbol of liberty of the French Republic.

“Anthony Ervin is the oldest-ever Olympic gold medalist, winning one last year at 35.”

There was a summer Olympics last year? Did I sleep through it?

Anthony swam in the lane next to my son at Sectionals. It was pretty cool. Happened several times during the course of that meet. 🤩
