Defending Olympic champ Ryan Lochte is officially entered in the 400 IM at U.S. Olympic Trials, per the psych sheets that dropped today.
The 400 IM was a major question mark in Lochte’s schedule, as the 31-year-old hasn’t swum the event much at all since winning Olympic gold in 2012.
In fact, Lochte has only swum the 400 IM 9 times since London, and only 7 times since his knee injury in 2013.
He started to heat up this year, though, going 4:12.66 at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin. That’s still nowhere near his winning 4:05.18 from the London Olympics, but is among Lochte’s better in-season swims in the event.
It’s worth noting that an entry into an event doesn’t necessarily mean any swimmer will for sure race that event in Omaha, as scratches can still be made closer to the meet.
Lochte is entered in 6 events overall: the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 free, 200 back, 200 IM and 100 fly.
Michael Phelps, who was the other U.S. Olympic entrant in the event in London, is out of the race, as was widely expected. Phelps has not ever appeared to include the race in his comeback plans.
Also of note in the 400 IM: NCAA standout Will Licon is not entered, likely due to the tough event conflict with the 100 breast.
Oh yea! That’s my boy!
With the 200 free and the 200 IM , Its logic he is entered in this one . Lets see how good he prepared this event next week
It doesn’t mean necessarily he will swim it.
I think he will though, he is in a 4:12 entry time, so why not? He might have to break 4:09 to make the team, but I don’t doubt it.
