Ryan Murphy Breaks National Age Group Record in Friday Prelims

A 3rd different National Age Group Record has gone down to the hands of a Bolles swimmer in the last week, with the latest coming from Ryan Murphy at the World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In prelims of the 100 meter backstroke, Murphy swam a 53.62 to not only take the top seed, but also to break the old record held by Jack Conger at 54.07 at the Junior Pan Pacs last year. Murphy now holds this record in the 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18 age groups (though his 15-16 record from the Olympic Trials last year was under Conger’s old 17-18 National Age Group Record).

Comparative splits:

Conger ’12 – 26.50 – 27.57 – 54.07
Murphy ’13 – 26.06 – 27.56 – 53.62

Murphy will have a chance to re-break his own record in finals, though his primary focus will likely be making sure he gets the win and a spot on the World Championship Team.

Congratulations Ryan, on your latest accomplishment. It couldn’t happen to a more dedicated and humble young man. Keep up the good work!
