For the second consecutive day, Cal Bear Ryan Murphy beat a murderer’s row of backstroking threats by a wide margin. Last night was the 100, tonight the 200, where the rising junior went 1:57.06. That’s just about a tenth off his season-best, which currently sits 9th in the world.
Olympic gold medalist Tyler Clary was second, putting up a 1:59.32, and the only other guy under two minutes was Jacob Pebley, Murphy’s college teammate, at 1:59.82.
Colombian Olympian Omar Pinzon was originally fourth, but took a DQ, moving Tristan Sanders of Club Wolverine up into that spot. Sanders was 2:01.60, just ahead of Olympic gold medalist in the 100 Matt Grevers at 2:01.89.
Bluefish’s Connor Green was 2:01.99, coming off his freshman year at Cal, and Michael Taylor, a 16-year-old from Dynamo, was 2:03.56 for 7th. The final A final spot went to Michael Phelps, coming off a big 200 IM and hurting a little bit on his way to a 2:04.11, about a second slower than he was in prelims.
North Baltimore’s Chase Kalisz took the B final in 2:02.84.

It’s going to be a great summer of racing and an exciting year leading up to Rio. This past weekend’s meets showed that anyone may end up making the Olympic team and touching the wall first. Swimming is an awesome sport.
He is going to be Stellar this summer , he is hungry for a special gold winning race in the 200 . In Pan Pacs , he was a bit off but not far at all from Clary and Irie . If he can pace his race with more smartness , he wins the 200 back .
Is he racing the 100 in Kazan ? i don’t remember who is with Grevers …
He might well be put in medley relay ( prelims + ??? Finals ) . I hope for him ….

If he medals in the 200, he probably will get a prelim swim in the medley relay
or he could sign up for the first world cup and get a time since it immediately follows worlds.
he might have an ‘in’ on the relay thing considering his personal coach is the head men’s coach! ha! sometimes that would make it a tougher call though.
