Ryan Murphy Puts Up 11th Fastest 100 Back This Season

Swimming in the heats at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials, Cal ace Ryan Murphy put forth a 53.66 to swim the 11th fastest time this season in the men’s 100m backstroke.

Murphy was out first, racing with Cal teammate Jacob Pebley, and came back strong to touch in first in his heat.

The time will take him to the consolation final tonight where he’ll get another chance to crack the top 10 rankings. Currently Japan’s Junya Koga sits in that position with a 53.49 that he swam at the Japanese Olympic Trials this week.

Murphy’s best time in the event is a 52.18 from the 2015 World Championships where he led off the 4x100m mixed medley relay in prelims with a new championship record.

Murphy is currently coming off the 2016 NCAA Championships where he broke the American record in the 50 and 100 yard backstrokes. Murphy’s gotten right back into tough work since the NCAA Championships, even working in a lift in the weight room yesterday between prelims and finals.

Murphy swam the 200m freestyle prelims yesterday, putting up a 1:49.70. He’ll be competing in the 100m backstroke finals tonight, before taking Thursday off. Murphy will resume competing on Thursday with the 100m freestyle, and complete his schedule on Saturday with the 200m backstroke where he’s the top seed.

Actually not stupid, if there is one guy swimming againts 7 guys he will have clear water all the race.

The same would be a girl swimming along 7 guys on free, if possible, she can draft a Lot on the race

Clear water was absolutely a non-factor in that race. The water he would have swum into with 7 other guys racing alongside would have been the same as what he experienced in that race, especially considering underwater breakouts were right near the 15 meter mark, he would have never been led. The other scenario, a girl swimming along 7 other guys, would be a factor because of drafting.

There is no rule (that I’m aware of) prohibiting breaking a World Record in a heat without any competition, for example, a time trial or a prelims heat at a non-major event, which would give someone a similar advantage. There is no requirement that competition has to be of a certain level for a record to count so the gender of your competitors shouldn’t matter either.

A little question,

Weren´t times made on Mixed Relays not eligible for Male or Female Records?

You’re right about that. However, there’s no way anyone can say that his 52.18 was not legitimate. I’m hoping he’ll pop a 52 tonight.

Good point, but strange.

That recognizes Murphy’s 52.18, but USA Swimming’s database does not include it as an official time.

Minor edit: Ryan Murphy broke the AR in 50-200 backstrokes at NCAAs.
