Rye Ulett Becomes 2nd 13-14 Girl Ever Under 2:10 in 200 Back

2019 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Fourteen-year-old Rye Ulett became the second 13-14 girl in history to break 2:10 in the 200 backstroke Thursday night at the 2019 U.S. National Championships.

Ulett, representing Dynamo Swim Club, went 2:09.70, splitting 30.58/33.00/33.10/33.02. Her best time prior to this meet was 2:13.16, which she swam in late July 2018. She went 2:11.98 in prelims Thursday morning before leaving that time in the dust in finals.

Missy Franklin‘s 13-14 national age group record from 2009 stands at 2:09.16, and she was the first and only girl to break 2:20 until today.

Top 5 Performers: 13-14 Girls 200 Backstroke

  1. Missy Franklin, 2:09.16, 2009
  2. Rye Ulett, 2:09.70, 2019
  3. Taylor Ruck, 2:10.22, 2015
  4. Alex Walsh, 2:10.55, 2015
  5. Beth Botsford, 2:10.66, 1996

Update: This article originally listed Nora Mirabal as owning a 2:09.27 swim from 2016, as it is listed on USA Swimming’s 13-14 rankings. That swim, however, appears to be entered in error.

Ulett won the B-final and would have taken second place overall had she been in the A-final. Asia Seidt won the race at 2:08.90 and Emma Seiberlich and Erin Voss tied for second at 2:10.86.

Ulett is also entered in the 100 fly, 100 back and 200 IM later in the meet.

Missy’s 13-14 NAG record happened during the supersuit era. That would make Rye’s swim a textile best for 13-14 girls. Congrats.

I don’t believe the time for Nora Mirabal is an accurate time. It is not in the SWIMS database for that year. If it is truly not accurate, Rye Ulett would be 2nd all time.

Someone make her Time TRIAL and get that record

She could get another chance at World Junior Championships, pending selection.

When does she turn 15? It’d be super cool to see her drop some more time to break this one.
