Sacred Heart Claims 9th Straight KHSAA Women’s State Swim and Dive Title

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) State Championships for swimming and diving were held across the state this weekend. 

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the meet was held at 3 separate sites and then the results were combined to determine the overall winners. 

Sacred Heart Academy won its 9th-straight women’s team championship with a total score of 407.5 points, coming over 200 points ahead of runner-up Assumption High School.

Women’s Team Scores:

Sacred Heart kicked off the meet by winning the 200 medley relay. The team of Mackenzie Lanning, Carlie Tyler, Chloe McDonald, and Brinly Hardy combined for a time of 1:45.70, winning by over 2 seconds. 

Minutes later, Lanning claimed victory in the 200 freestyle. The junior touched the wall in a time of 1:49.89 to shave over 3 seconds off of her seed time. Lanning also finished 2nd in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.74.

Sacred Heart’s Annabel Crush gave the school their third win of the meet by claiming the top spot in the 200 IM. Crush stopped the clock in a time of 1:59.26 to win the event by almost 7 seconds. Crush also claimed an individual victory in the 100 backstroke, where she swam to a time of 52.66 to smash the KHSAA record of 52.89. 

Madeline Meredith and McDonald went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly for Sacred Heart. Meredith touched in a time of 54.68, cutting .08 off of her seed time, while McDonald finished in a time of 55.54. 

Sacred Heart completed the relay sweep by claiming the 200 and 400 freestyle relay titles. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Crush, Hardy, Caroline Pape, and Meredith combined for a time of 1:34.24, coming within .15 of the KHSAA record. The team of Crush, Meredith Bauer, Pape, and Meredith then won the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:24.96, finishing almost 6 seconds ahead of the field.

Assumption’s Ella Welch was also a double event winner for the day, sweeping the sprint freestyle events. Welch posted a time of 22.63 to claim victory in the 50 freestyle, coming within .3 of the state record, which stands at 22.36. In the 100 freestyle, Welch touched in a time of 48.85 to demolish the KHSAA record by over a half second. The previous record stood at 49.58.

Other Event Winners:

  • Assumption’s Eden Humphrey won the 500 freestyle, touching in a time of 4:57.05, cutting a second off of her best in the process. 
  • Sophomore Lainy Kruger won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.85, coming in just above the state record of 1:01.29.
  • Freshman Peytton Moore won the 1m diving event, scoring a total of 429.5 points.
