Sacred Heart Women Kick Off Season With Annual Pioneer Pentathlon

MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women’s swim and dive team hosted their Annual Pioneer Pentathlon at McCann Natatorium on Saturday, one week before the Pioneers open their season. First-year, Sophia Velleco, won three events including the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, and the 100 freestyle, and was awarded the overall top scorer of the day.

Swimmers competed in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 masters breaststroke (non-traditional event), 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley. The divers competed in the one-meter event.

Behind Velleco, Amanda Conti secured runner-up with a win in the 100 butterfly. Melanie Sanchez showed depth in all events to secure third overall.

Junior Rosemery Nieto captured victory in the 100 breaststroke. Winning the masters breaststroke was Leila Sopfiane. Emma Chambers secured the win in the 200 IM. The one-meter diving championship went to senior Olivia McNicholas.

Up Next: The Pioneers diving squad opens their season at the Fairfield Invitational Friday, October 6th, at 6:00 pm. Sacred Heart then travels to Stonehill College for a dual meet on Saturday, October 7th, at 12:00 pm.
