SafeSport Suspends Swim Coach Riley Shea for 6 Months

Less than a month after being listed in the U.S. Center for SafeSport’s disciplinary database for “allegations of misconduct,” 29-year-old swim coach Riley Shea has been handed a six-month suspension.

The reason for Shea’s suspension is listed as “Inappropriate Conduct; Emotional Misconduct; Proactive Policy Violation.” His period of ineligibility will run from April 5 to October 5 after previously having temporary restrictions — “No Unsupervised Coaching / Training, No Contact Directive(s), Contact / Communication Limitation(s) — since March 9.

Shea was formerly the boys swimming & diving head coach at Anchor Bay Athletics in New Baltimore, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, where in 2020 he won a conference title en route to Macomb County Coach of the Year honors. He remained the coach there into the 2021-2022 season.

Shea was also formerly an associate head coach with the Lakers Aquatic Club and most recently worked with the Great Lake Tritons.

The US Center for SafeSport can apply suspensions or specific restrictions at any point in their investigative process. Prior cases have seen these interim restrictions turn into full-fledged suspensions or erased when cases are closed without findings of any Code of Conduct violations that warrant a full suspension.
