The San Diego State women’s swimming and diving team took a 133-74 decision against Pepperdine at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Thursday afternoon.

“We mixed it up a bit today. We tried different athletes in different races,” said head coach Mike Shrader. “It provides a little bit of variety, and with the team having a lot of individual medley swimmers, that will hopefully make them stronger going forward.”

The Aztecs started the meet on a strong note, having Ava Howard, Klara Thormalm, Elliyana Ferrin and Ana Candelot Roman team up for a first-place time in the 200-medley relay at 1:49.87.

In the individual races, the Aztecs posted the top three scores in the 50 back, 50 breast, and 50fly. Newcomer Natalie Carter led the way in the 50 back with a first-place time of 27.51, whilebLarisa Tam touched the wall at 30.50 in the 50 breast to lead the pack. Klara Thormalmrecorded a time of 25.69 – just 0.13 seconds faster than teammate Courtney Vincent –  to earn first place honors in the 50 fly.

Summer Harrison rounded out the meet with a first-place time of 24.38 in the 50 free.

SDSU, now 2-0 on the year in dual meets, extends its head-to-head dual meet winning streak to 16 – a streak that dates to Nov. 7, 2015.

The Aztecs will continue to head north, as the team participates in the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Fresno State on Friday and Saturday. SDSU will compete against national runner-up California, and fellow Mountain West members Fresno State, Nevada and San Jose State.

The Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a home dual meet against San Diego State on Thursday, falling 133-74 in a close competition at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

Three Waves picked up wins as the two teams competed in sprint and diving events. It was the first of two dual meets this season between Pepperdine and San Diego State. The Waves drastically closed the gap with the perennially strong Aztecs after losing by over 100 points to San Diego State last season.

Julia Sneden (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) got in the win column first for the Waves, taking the 100 butterfly with a time of :58.68. Freshman Amy Griffin (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) won the 100 free in her first collegiate competition, swimming a :53.72 to edge the Aztec’s Summer Harrison by 0.09 of a second. Khloe McCarthy (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western HS) picked up the Waves’ third win of the day, posting a 5:14.90 in the 500 free.

Lauren Stigers (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) was Pepperdine’s high finisher in the one-meter diving competition.

Pepperdine is back in action Oct. 20-21 when the team hosts the Malibu Invitational.
