The San Diego State swimming and diving team completed the dual meet portion of it 2016-17 schedule with a victory over the University of San Diego, 215-82, Friday afternoon at the USD Sports Center Pool. The win, accomplished in rainy and windy weather conditions, allowed the Aztecs to improve to 8-0 on the season.

The Aztecs won 10 of the meet’s 12 individual swimming events as well as both relays and diving competitions.

SDSU began the meet by capturing the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Alexa Clayfield, Morganne McKennan, Summer Harrison and Alma Thormalm won with a time of 1:48.42.

McKenna Meyer won three individual races while Frida Berggren and Caitlin Delany were also multiple winners with two first-place finishes apiece.

Meyer was victorious in the 1000 freestyle (10:24.54), 100 freestyle (53.23) and 200 individual medley (2:10.26). Berggren took first in both the 200 free (1:53.70) and 500 free (5:07.42) while freshman Delany captured the 100 breast (1:06.03) and 200 breast (2:22.83) events.

Three other Aztecs won their individual events as well. Kate Santilena captured the 100 backstroke (58.11) while McKenna Garfein took the 200 backstroke (2:08.71). In addition, Alma Thormalm was victorious in the 100 butterfly (57.12).

The Aztecs ended the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of Thormalm, Harrison, Peyton Wilson and Berggren turned in a mark of 3:35.42.

The diving competition, which was contested at San Diego State, saw Aztec junior Alexandra Caplan win both events with scores of 296.62 on the 1-meter and 3:18.60 on the 3-meter board. Both marks were NCAA Zone qualifying scores.

SDSU’s Makena Chamoures also registered a pair of Zone qualifying marks with a 275.17 on the 1-meter and 313.12 on the 3-meter board. Her latter score ranks as the fifth-highest for an Aztec diver.

In addition, Nicole Dutton’s score of 298.97 on the 1-meter springboard is the fifth-best in program history along with being a Zone qualifying score.

The SDSU divers will be in action next weekend when they compete at the Air Force Diving Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Up next for the swimmers is the annual Mountain West Championships scheduled for Feb. 15-18 in College Station, Texas.
