San Diego, Calif. – USD swim and dive dominated Dixie State in their dual meet on Saturday at the Sports Center Pool in San Diego. The Toreros came in first place in 12 of the 14 events, and raced to both the second and third place spots in the other two. The final score was 189-62 Toreros.

Freshman contributed four first place finishes; three coming from Rachel Hubka. Hubka continued her streak of strong performances, finishing first in all her events including the 200 free relay. Her 50-yard fly, 50-yard free, and 100-yard free times were solid showings but were not enough to match her career-best times she set at the Pepperdine Invitational just a few weeks before.

Fellow freshman Callie Johnson swam into first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with her 1:08.72 time. Johnson proved she wasn’t the only strong breaststroker on the team as the Toreros took first through fourth place in that event.

Dive had an exceptional day, with Isabel Busyn finishing with a 433.28 while Catherine McCarthy secured a 412.57.  Both divers showed improvements from their last meet and achieved higher scores.

USD finished out the year having won every dual meet so far this season, and had strong performances in their other meets as well.

Dixie State collected two event wins and several top-three event finishes at its dual meet at the University of San Diego Saturday at the USD Sports Center Pool. The Toreros combined to outscore the Trailblazers by a 189-62 margin to claim the meet win.

Sophomore Kelsea Wright came away with one event victory and two runner-up showings to lead the Trailblazers as she won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.43, and placed second overall in the 50 back (28.39) and 100 butterfly (1:00.20). Freshman Portia Blackert also claimed an event win in the 500 free with a time of 5:14.86.

Other performances of note, freshman Kyrie Sutherland recorded the eighth-fastest 50 breaststroke time in program history with a third-place 32.15. Sutherland also placed third in both in the 50 free (25.52) and 100 free (56.10), while junior Miriam Gonzalez took third in the 100 IM at 1:02.90, and posted the ninth-fastest 50 breast all-time mark at DSU with a fourth-place 32.23.

In addition, the 200 free relay team of Haley JonesMegan HillTaylor Walton and Mikel Flatley touched the wall in second place at 1:40.50.

Dixie State will open the 2020 calendar year with a pair of meets in the “Centennial State” the weekend of Jan. 9-11. DSU opens the trip with a dual meet at Western Colorado on Thursday, Jan. 9, followed by a two-day cumulative dual vs. both Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, in Grand Junction.
