San Jose State Adds Commitment from Backstroker Makenna Mathieson

Littleton, Colorado‘s Makenna Mathieson has committed to swim at San Jose State University in 2018-19. She will join Shelby Mullendore and Dasha Cocol in the Spartans‘ class of 2022.

“I am so excited and honored to announce my commitment to swim and study at San Jose State University!! Thanks so much to my family, friends, and coaches who have made this possible for me. I am looking forward to workin with Coach Hopkins and spending the next 4 years doing what I love at SJSU!!! Go Spartans!!!!”

A senior at Rock Canyon High School, Mathieson is a multi-time finalist in the Colorado 5A state meets. As a junior at the 2017 CHSAA Girls 5A State Championships she placed seventh in the 100 back (57.10) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:10.33), and swam legs on the 200 medley relay (26.54 leadoff backstroke) and 400 free relay (53.69 leadoff). Mathieson swims year-round at Denver Swim Academy. She competed in the 100/200 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM at the 2017 Winter Junior Nationals West.

Mathieson would have been a C finalist in the 100 back at the 2017 Mountain West Conference Championships; she would have been just shy of finaling in the 200 back and 100 fly. Her top SCY times include:

  • 50 back – 26.54
  • 100 back – 35
  • 200 back – 2:03.84
  • 100 fly – 59
  • 100 free – 11
