Santana Puts Up Fastest 50 Freestyle in Prelims on Day Three in Nanjing

DAY 3 – PRELIMS

On Sunday night Matheus Santana of Brazil entertained the crowd by posting a 47.73 on the third leg of the mixed 4 x 100 freestyle relay, today he returned to the pool to post the fastest qualifying time in the boys 50 freestyle. Santana, who has a lifetime best of 22.16, recorded a time of 22.55. He will be a real threat to take down Australian Luke Percy’s 2013 junior world record of 22.11.

Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago came into the competition with a lifetime best of 23.01, posted a 22.65 to qualify second followed by Yu Hexin of China qualified third in a time of 22.79.

Last night Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania took the girls 50 breaststroke in a time of 30.14 and tonight she qualified for the semi-final with the second fastest time of 1:08.97. Anastasiya Malyavina of the Ukraine was the top qualifier posting a time of 1:08.91.

Two girls dipped under the 27 second mark in the the 50 butterfly, Svenja Stoffel of Switzerland and Rozaliya Nasretdinova of Russia. Stoffel, who came in with a lifetime best of 26.56 posted a 26.93 while Nasretdinova, who has a lifetime best of 26.56, finished in a time of 26.98. Both women will have a shot at Svetlana Chimrova’s world junior record of 26.32.

Robert Andrei Glinta of Romania qualified with the fastest time in the boys 50 backstroke posting a time of 25.63. Evgeny Rylov of Russia had the next fastest time of 25.66. He was followed Italian Simone Sabbioni, who tied the Russian for the gold in the 100 backstroke, who recorded a time of 25.90.

All three boys will be chasing the world junior mark of 25.22 set by Sabbioni in July.

Hannah Moore of the United States will go into the girls 200 backstroke with the top qualifying time of 2:11.02. Followed by Amy Forrester of Australia who posted a 2:12.85 and Ambra Esposito of Italy who finished in a time of 2:13.00.
