Already on the first night of finals at the 2019 German Short Course National Championships, a new national mark went down in the event at the top of the agenda.
25-year-old Sarah Köhler made it happen in the women’s 800m freestyle final tonight in Berlin, with the Frankfurt native firing off a time of 8:08.02 to take the gold. Her result this evening laid waste to her own previous German standard of 8:10.54 notched at the 2018 World Short Course Championships. There in Hangzhou, Köhler finished 5th overall in this event.
Of her record-setting feat, Köhler stated, “I’m a bit surprised but super happy. I’ve been in training camp for the last 4 weeks and it’s been pretty good. But, I didn’t expect that now.”
Köhler’s time easily dips under the 8:24.50 needed to qualify for this year’s European Short Course Championships set for December 4th-8th in Glasgow, Scotland. Her outing also inserts her into the list of all-time performers at #10 in this SCM 800 free, tying Kristel Kobrich.
The German freestyle ace is coming off of a 1500m freestyle silver at the long course World Championships in Gwangju, Korea. At the 2017 edition of the European Short Course Championships, she took 800m free gold and 400m free silver.
Finishing with the silver in tonight’s 800m race was Celine Rieder, who touched in 8:16.85 to also qualify for Glasgow.
3rd place finisher Isabel Gose clocked a monster personal best of 8:17.18 to establish a new German Age Record for 17-year-olds. Gose is the was a 3-time gold medalist at this year’s European Junior Championships, sweeping the women’s 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle events.
Splits for the top 3 finishers were as follows:
