WOMEN’S 50 FREESTYLE FINAL
- Mare Nostrum Record: 23.82, Sarah Sjostrom, Sweden
Results:
- Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) – 23.84
- Michelle Coleman (SWE) – 24.48
- Petra Senanszky (HUN) – 24.57
- Florine Gaspard (BEL) -24.83
Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden blasted a 23.84 50 freestyle en route to a win in the final in Monaco. That was just off of her World leading time of a 23.69 that she swam to win the event at the 2024 World Championships.
Her time from today also was faster than the 2nd fastest swimmer of the year Kate Douglass of the US who swam an American Record of a 23.91 at 2024 Worlds. Only three women have been under the 24-second mark this season as Kasia Wasick of Poland swam a 23.95 at 2024 Worlds as well.
Sjostrom looks to win gold in the event at the Paris Olympics after winning silver in the event in 2020(1) in Tokyo even after breaking her elbow prior to the Games.
2023-2024 LCM Women 50 Free
SJOSTROM
23.66
2 | Kate DOUGLASS | USA | 23.91 | 02/18 |
3 | Kasia Wasick | POL | 23.95 | 02/18 |
4 | Meg HARRIS | AUS | 23.97 | 08/04 |
5 | Shayna JACK | AUS | 23.99 | 06/15 |
Sjostrom is the World Record holder in the event as she swam a best time of a 23.61 in semifinals at the 2023 World Championships last July. That was faster than her previous World Record of a 23.67 that she swam at the 2017 World Championships. Sjostrom is the only woman to ever have dropped below the 23.7 mark, and she has done so five times including three in the last year.
Today’s swim is tied for the 17th fastest swim all-time with Cate Campbell of Australia who swam a 23.84 at the 2016 Australian Championships. In total, Sjostrom now holds 15 out of the 25 top 50 freestyle performances all-time.
Sarah Sjostrom once again casually swimming faster than any American woman ever has.
She’s the best female sprinter of all time, and it’s not close.
The irony is Sarah Sjostrom has never won the gold medal in the W 100 FR at the World Aquatics Championships or Summer Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Inge de Bruijn has entered the chat.
4 individual Olympic golds to 1. It just depends on your preference if you value Olympic golds over times/world titles.
Don’t forget she had a smashed elbow just before Tokyo. Without that Sarah at Tokyo would have won more medals.
And also most Australian, Dutch, Chinese, etc. women ever…
But it is edgy to be anti-American.
It’s just so tiresome
At least have a funny take on it
Once upon a time, Sarah Sjostrom swam a loaded schedule at the Summer Olympics:
W 100 FL
W 50 FR
W 100 FR
W 200 FR
I would have liked to seen that for one last time.
It’s more important that she swims a much reduced schedule and wins Gold in the 50 free!
Well, how did that work out for her? In her position I’d rather focus on the 50 free(perhaps add the 100 but idk) and get that gold than get 4 minor medals
Well it works out nicely schedule-wise and since Jan 2023 she’s tied for the 5th fastest performance from her lead-off in Fukuoka. Only MOC and Haughey have been faster in this time. So if she just trains as she does for the 50s and then just rocks up and swims the 100 Free…
I still remember the race between Katie Ledecky and Sarah Sjostrom in the W 200 FR at the 2016 Rio Olympics. That was one for the ages. As a footnote, both swimmers posted their personal best times (1:53.73, 1:54.08) in the aforementioned event.

You beat me to it 😉
With lats like those, no wonder she can fly
Can we stop the hyperbolical marketing-speak “all time” and just use “so far” please? It’s not “all time”. Think about it.
Huh?
Because of entropy, as far as we can discern, time flows in one direction. For us, it is all time as we do not know what the future holds. If we end up in a situation where we can reverse time and entropy, then you might have a point.
You’re being tautological at best.
This comment makes me so happy.
With that line of thought, I guess you must think Michael Phelps is just some guy. Respect greatness when you see it, I promise it’s a lot more fun.
‘Best of all time’ means ‘best that has ever existed,’ it does not include individuals that may exist in the future
Bruh, those are literally the same thing… with every passing moment, it’s all time. Unless you’ve got a time-traveling DeLorean at home we don’t know about?
By that metric, we shouldn’t be have world records; we should only have “world records…for now.”
She is jacked
Anya,
she’s Petra Senanszky.
As a man, I’d love wings like hers
Bonk!
