Saturday, July 30th will be the U.S. Olympic Swim Team’s open practice at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Aquatic Center.
The team traveled on Thursday from their first stop in San Antonio, Texas to their final pre-Rio training camp Atlanta, Georgia, where they’ll stay until August 2nd, when they depart via a charter flight to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A phone call revealed that one practice next weekend will be open to the public – but only on a limited scale. Unlike the open practice in San Antonio last week, where 4,500 fans were admitted, only 1,500 will be allowed to watch the workout in Atlanta. Tickets will be free, but are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday morning. Doors are planned to open at 9AM, with practice beginning at 11AM – a relatively-late start as Team USA tries to prepare for the unusual late-prelims, past-midnight finals schedule they’ll face at the Olympics.
Also unlike San Antonio, the pool at Georgia Tech is indoors and climate-controlled.
Michael Phelps, using Facebook live from the team’s charter flight from San Antonio to Georgia, alluded to the possibility of some off-the-block 100s from the men’s team. Those results could have implications for the American 400 free relay that’s still searching for the right formula after missing the final at last year’s World Championships.
Does this mean we in the U.S. will not be seeing the swimming finals live but tape delayed since they will be after midnight like it states above??

It looks like NBC will be broadcasting swimming finals live (see the “late night” broadcast). If not, I was able to watch all of the rest of the swimming trials on my computer via the NBC live extra website.

Let’s not be coy, here is what is going to happen…the 3rd through 6th place finishers at trials will compete at prelims in Rio. They will go in the neighbood of 3:12. The fastest one of the morning swimmers will swim in finals with Dressel, Adrian, and Phelps. I’m predicting Ervin gets that 4th slot.

I like how you put Ervin on 47.50 and Phelps on 47.50…. However, here is my argument on trusting our young guys by putting Held on it:

2016 NCAA Championships – 100 Fr Prelims 41.78 —– Finals 41.77 —— Relay lead off 41.82 —– CONSISTENCY
2016 US Olympic Trials – 100 Fr Prelims 48.46 —— Semi 48.48 —— Finals 48.26 —— CONSISTENCY
Point 1 – If he goes .72 FASTER than his best at Trials, we assume he’d go somewhere in the 47.50s…

I still don’t understand why Phelps should be on either freestyle relay. This isn’t 2008 or 2012. I just searched the rankings for the last 1.5 years. I didn’t see any freestyle swims by him that even warranted him being in the discussion. Heart doesn’t always equal results.
I think Phelps should be considered for the 800 free relay but not the 400 free relay. But he will be on both. I believe his coach is the Head Coach and don’t think he leaves him off any relay.
He actually swam decent 100s and bad 200s in his comeback. And anyone that follows swimming knows his coach Bob bowman is the US head coach
I do know swimming. Bob Bowman will not put Phelps in just because he used to be a clutch relay swimmer. Has he swum a relay since London? No. Comeback times – 49.72 100 free. 148.21 200 free.
Actually no. Before he was booted off the US World Champs team for 2015, he was entered in the 100 free for the US. He went a 48.45 at the Pan Pac Champs in 2014 for the second best US time that year. Presumably he would have been faster in 2015 as he seemed to be faster all around. Not sure what his 2016 would look like given he isn’t as fast, yet, in 2016 as he was in 2015. But he has put up some decent 100 frees since his return.
