SCAD Savannah Picks Up Verbal from NOVA of Virginia’s Abigail Richey

Virginia high school state champion Abigail Richey has made a verbal commitment to SCAD Savannah for 2015-16.

“SCAD gives me a chance to excel in the art field like no other school could offer.”

A senior at Colonial Heights High School, Richey is the reigning Virginia High School League 3A champion in both the 200 free (1:50.12) and 500 free (4:54.33). Richey also won the 200 free her sophomore year.

Richey swims at NOVA of Virginia, where her top times are:

200y free: 1:49.25
500y free: 4:50.36
100y fly: 56.20
200y fly: 2:04.19
200y IM: 2:05.44
400y IM: 4:24.63

Richey is a nice addition to the SCAD Savannah women’s roster. The NAIA runner-up Bees compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference against NCAA Division II and Division III opponents. SCAD head coach Chris Conlon and assistant coach Bill Pilczuk will have many choices where to use the versatile Richey. Her best times would have placed her at or near the top in both mid-distance freestyle events as well as in both IMs at the 2014 BMC Championships. Moreover, she has the potential be an NAIA national champion from her freshman year. Richey will also be a big asset to SCAD’s relays.

Richey is a terrific get for the Bees, whose current crop of mid-distance and distance freestylers, led by two-time NAIA national champion Caroline Lepesant, are now juniors. The 2015-16 season should be an exciting one for the Lady Bees.
