SCAD Women, Men Lead After Day 1 of SCAD Invite in Savannah, GA

With four swimmers in the top eight of the women’s 1650 and three more in the top 16, the Bees of SCAD Savannah jumped out to an early lead on Thursday night at their own invitational at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah, Georgia. Junior Courtney Hayward of Brenau won the event in a personal-best 16:56.92. She was followed by Emory sophomore Isabella Issa in 16:58.08. SCAD’s Caroline Lepesant, just back from competing at NAIA Cross Country Nationals, swam her first mile of the season and led the Bees in a 3-4-5 sweep with 17:43.20. Teammates Haley Thompson and Emma McKinley followed. The rest of the top 8 consisted of Ella Kleinschmidt of Brenau, Claudia Sherman of Emory, and Rebecca Justus of SCAD.

SCAD’s Joel Ax won the men’s 1650, clocking a 15:45.17. Emory freshmen Jonathan Morse (15:53.13) and Matt Varraveto (15:59.35) placed second and third. SCAD’s Kyle Peach and Roger Kjos gave the Bees three in the top 8 with their fourth- and fifth-place finishes; Felipe Aguilar (Point University), Cory Mullins (Berry College), and Ryan Davis (South Georgia State) rounded out the top eight.

The evening ended with the 800 free relays. The A teams of Emory (Ava Salmi, Hannah Baratz, Kike Afolabi-Brown, and Amelia Anderson), SCAD (Abigail Richey, Julie Henninger, Hannah Legg, and Thompson) and Brenau (Alisha Hodgetts, Kleinschmidt, Lindsay Dowling, and Hayward) led the women’s field, while Emory A (Alex Kohlman, Matt Wu, Zach Chen, and Hayes Burdette-Sapp), SCAD A (Tyler Prescott, Kjos, Nick Wargo, and Ax), and SCAD C (JT Bartel, Karl Hegwein, Mark Shvartsman, and Connor Wilson) turned in the fastest times on the men’s side.

At the end of the first day of racing, the women’s scores were SCAD 139; Emory 99; Brenau 91; South Georgia State 55; Thomas 25; Berry 14; Point 12.

For the men it was SCAD with 115 points; South Georgia State 74; Emory 73; Berry 70; Thomas 31; Point 13.
