Schmidtke’s 59.2 butterfly highlights day 2 of Columbus Sectionals

A sweep of individual events by the Ohio State Swim Club was led by a lifetime-best Aliena Schmidtke 100 fly on day 2 of the Sectional meet in Columbus.

Schmidtke, a German national who just wrapped her senior year at OSU, cracked her personal best in the 100 fly with a 59.27 to win the event by a second and a half.

Her previous lifetime-best was a 59.59 from last July.

The Buckeyes swept all 6 individual events on the night, continuing their dominance from day 1.

Lindsey Clary and Matt McHugh each earned their second wins of the weekend for OSU. Clary continued her reign over the longest of races, going 4:47.70 to win the 400 IM. McHugh, meanwhile, hit a lifetime-best 53.58 to win the 100 fly.

It’s been a great summer for McHugh, who smashed his personal best in June with a 53.63, and now re-set his PR just a month later. Previously, McHugh hadn’t been under 54.8.

The other winner on the women’s side was Samantha Cheverton, a Buckeye alum who now represents Canada internationally. The 26-year-old Cheverton took the 200 free in 2:00.44.

Rising sophomore Steffen Hillmer won the men’s version of that event. Hillmer is a German national, and went 1:51.12 to beat out Club Wolverine’s Andrew Henry.

And rising senior Chris DePietro won the night’s final event, the men’s 400 IM, in a 4:26.62, with his younger brother Ryan close behind (4:28.56). Ryan currently swims for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Full meet results are available on Meet Mobile.
