Schmitt Scratches 400 Free on Day 1 of Austin Grand Prix

Allison Schmitt will swim only a single event on Friday morning’s prelims session, as the heat sheets for the 1st day of the 2013 Austin Grand Prix show the Olympic champion has scratched the 400 free and will swim just the 100 free on Friday.

Schmitt was the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 400 free, and has remaining entries in the 200 free and in the 200 fly; the 200 free is the event where she won her individual Olympic gold medal, to go with a pair of relay wins.

Still in that race, however, will be Katie Ledecky and Lotte Friis: the two stars who battled head-to-head in the 800 and 1500 frees at the 2013 World Championships.

The first day of racing begins at 9AM U.S. Central Time. Live results for the meet can be found here, and all of the other information needed to follow the meet can be found here.

Correction: an earlier version of this report said that Schmitt had scratched the 100 free as well, which was incorrect.

Probably a good move to keep Friis and Schmitt from swimming against each other in the 400. The competition is there on a daily and weekly basis. Why race the 400 every meet?

Maybe she just isn’t comfortable swimming that 400 yet. Does anyone know how long she has been training with NBAC? Did she just start recently?

And with her older age, does she still want to swim the 400 free? The 200 free is her primary event and perhaps she will continue to swim the 100 free with a possible relay in mind. Camille Muffat is at the same period of her career and I have the same interrogations about her enthusiasm for the 400 free. And both girls have seen how dominant was Katie Ledecky in Barcelona.

55.46 for Schmitt in the last heat, 0.11 behind VDP.
Comfortable qualification for both.
Great impression from Simone Manuel in the previous heat (54.60).
Not bad Katie Ledecky who swam a 56.00 (the same time of Natalie Coghlin) who should be good enough for the A-final

I see her name in the friday prelim heat sheet for the 100 free but not the 400 free. Are we sure she’s not swimming the 100?

Good catch! I’m curious too, is there updated news since the heat sheet was released that she’s not swimming the 100? Anyway, still curious to know why she’s not swimming the 400.

Aw, I’m sad to hear that. I hope we find out why. I wonder if she’s feeling under the weather? This is a woman who swam the B-finals at World Champs, so she doesn’t strike me as someone to just back down for no reason at all. I wouldn’t be so quick to say that this is a sign of another bad season.

Why pray tell? What is going on with her?
