SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota swimming and diving produced four school records and 13 new marks inside the school’s all-time top 10 lists during Saturday’s final day of the Augustana Invitational held at Midco Aquatic Center.
Taylor Buhr, a freshman, broke a pair of individual school records while the Coyotes closed the three-day competition by sweeping the 400 free relay races as both the men and women set school records in the process.
South Dakota women won the 13-team meet with 1,664 points while the men’s team finished second in the five-team meet with 1,315 points.
Buhr began her evening with a record in the 100 IM where her 56.73 time from the finals won the race. The Coyotes placed five in the top eight of the race in the finals in an event that saw six individuals on the top 10 lists compete.
Buhr, from Bettendorf, Iowa, added the school record in the 200 breast, later during Saturday’s final session with a winning time of 2:17.22. She took out teammate Cassie Ketterling from the top spot on the all-time charts in both events.
Emily Kahn, a sophomore, lowered her school record in the 100 free to 49.73, becoming the first to break the 50-second barrier, as she won the race that saw teammate Carson White finish third and Camilla Brogger-Andersen fifth.
Kahn would close the evening anchoring the 400 free relay to victory as teammates Tatum O’Shea, Carson White and Brogger-Andersen joined her in a school record 3:23.08.
Meanwhile, the men’s foursome of Zachary Kopp, Alec Thomas, Adam Fisher and Mack Sathre clocked 2:57.59 for the win and the school record in the 400 free relay.
Sathre, a senior, lowered his school record time in the 100 IM not once, but twice, as he clocked 49.20 in the morning prelims and came back to win the race at finish in 49.18 during the finals.
Sathre led a trio of Coyotes to the wall in the 100 IM as Grant Wolner and Parker Sonnabend tied for second in 50.14 seconds.
O’Shea, a freshman, won the 200 back in 2:00.75, moving to third all-time, while Keegan Henning, a junior, won the 1,650 free in 16:07.44 as South Dakota won five of the 12 races contested on day three and also finished second six times.

SIOUX FALLS — Aiden Carstensen’s school-record performance in the 200-yard backstroke Saturday put the exclamation point on the South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team’s championship performance at the three-day Augustana Invitational held at the Midco Aquatic Center.
A freshman from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carstensen was one of three individual champions for the Jackrabbits in Saturday’s evening session. After posting the second-fastest time in the morning prelims of the 200 backstroke, Carstensen came back during the evening session with a record time of 1 minute, 47.77 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:49.13 set by Jared Miller in 2018.
Joining Carstensen in the 200 backstroke finals were Marcus Benson, fifth in 1:54.77, and Caleb Harthoorn, sixth in 1:56.11.
Fellow freshman Braxton McGrath nearly duplicated Carstensen’s feat in winning the 200 butterfly. McGrath’s time of 1:50.81 marked the second-fastest in program history, while runner-up Damon Venner’s runner-up time of 1:50.92 stands third in the Jackrabbit annals.
Max White completed the sweep of the top three spots in the 200 butterfly for the Jackrabbits with a third-place time of 1:53.27. Bryan Wong took fifth in 1:53.71.
Rafael Negri continued his impressive weekend in the pool by winning the 100 freestyle title in 44.57 seconds, a mark that now ranks third in program history. Negri led a group of five Jackrabbits in the 10-swimmer final and was joined on the podium by Alex Kraft, who placed third in 45.21 seconds.
SDSU swimmers also claimed the fifth (Liam Murray, 45.86 seconds), sixth (Sam Johnson, 45.92 seconds) and seventh (Jon Galles, 46.11 seconds) spots in the 100 freestyle.
Negri later teamed with Eric Anderson, Murray and Kraft for a runner-up time of 3:00.42 in the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet.
Galles, Gavin Wheeler and Austin Smith all swam in a pair of individual event finals Saturday night. Galles added a seventh-place effort in the 100 individual medley, 52.11 seconds, while Wheeler was eighth in the 100 IM, 52.65 seconds, and seventh in the 200 breaststroke, 2:11.48.
Four other Jackrabbits made up the final grouping in the 200 breaststroke, led by freshmen Conner Harr (fourth, 2:06.92) and Matthew Heaphy (sixth, 2:08.54). Matt Sorensen (2:11.49) and Reece Stikeleather (2:12.59) came in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Smith opened the finals session with a sixth-place effort in the 100 IM, 51.68 seconds, and was ninth in the 200 butterfly, 1:55.40.
In the longest event of the meet, Jack Ellison turned a runner-up finish in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:23.03. Collin Schock was sixth for the Jackrabbits in 16:36.86.
SDSU racked up 1,784 points in claiming the team title. South Dakota was second with 1,315 points, followed by Augustana with 1,034. Iowa Central (911) and Iowa Lakes (232) rounded out the five-team men’s field.

The Augustana Invitational marked the final competition of the fall season for the Jackrabbits. SDSU is scheduled to return to action Jan. 14, when it hosts St. Cloud State in dual action.
