MEN’S 100 FLY – FINALS

Joseph Schooling‘s 100 fly this evening ranks him as the 15th-fastest in the world this year, despite being well-off his best time of 50.96 established last summer in Kazan. Shields’ time of 52.02 was also good for the 17th-fastest time in the world this year (though he already sits at 6th with his time from Winter Nationals in December of 2015). Shields and Schooling were in a league of their own, being the only two under 53 seconds tonight.

Caeleb Dressel took time off his morning swim, but still only placed sixth with a time of 53.75, tying with Gunnar Bentz, who already took 2nd in the 200 free tonight, where Dressel took 11th. Though Dressel bested Conger at NCAA’s in the 100 yard fly and swam faster than Shields ever did in the yards version of the race, he still seems to be adjusting to swimming fly in long course.
Compared to other Texas guys, Schooling looks very fast. If he is at the same point of training as his training partners, then going sub 52 right now is very impressive. No doubt he’s the favorite for the bronze medal in Rio.
Just the bronze?
The 100 fly is going to be very very close this summer. I think he will get 2nd, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he won. You have to remember who he’s racing against, Phelps, Cseh and Le Clos are all going to be very good this summer
We’ll have to see his 200 fly today to see how rested he is! But a sub-52 is always impressive in season. Especially considering he didn’t really have a good turn and missed his breakout (came up behind Shields despite going to the wall first). His 2nd 50 split (27.48) is similar to his split in Kazan last year (27.43). With a taper he’ll have a bit more front end speed so it looks very promising at the moment. Gonna be a good race in Rio!
