Scratch Bumps UNC’s Elizabeth Sowards Into NCAAs

2025 Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

UNC’s Elizabeth Sowards will join the roster for the upcoming 2025 NCAA Championships after a scratch has earned her an invite. Sowards was the #38 seed in the 100 back after swimming a lifetime best of a 51.73 at the Tennessee Last Chance meet. She books her ticket to her 2nd NCAAs after being a relay-only swimmer a year ago.

Although updated psych sheets have not been released, the most likely reason is from Virginia dropping a swimmer to make room for diver Elizabeth Kaye. Virginia had 18 swimmers invited to the meet, the maximum allowed. While an update has not been released, the drop appears to be Ella Bathurst, who is currently back in her home state of Florida for spring break.

Sowards is the 2nd alternate to earn an invite after Casaundra Moses was first to be selected off of the list of alternates. Moses earned the invite as Nevada’s Scarlett Ferris scratched due to injury.

With the addition of Sowards, UNC now has eight individual qualifiers. The pre-scratch psych sheets had Sowards as the #38 seed in the 100 back (the event she earned the invite in) and the t-#99 seed in the 100 free. With many women not making the cutline ahead of her in the 100 free, expect her to move up a lot in the event once psych sheets are updated.

That makes 8 individual qualifers for UNC’s women along with 9 for the men. Pretty impressive what Gangloff & co. have been able to do this year, definitely a program on the rise!

UVA has dropped Bathurst two years in a row. That’s gotta sting.

If I was a senior not seeded to score and was dropped instead of a freshman not seeded to score, I’d be very upset.
