San Diego State freshman McKenna Meyer was a highly-heralded distance recruit for the Aztecs last fall when she signed her National Letter of Intent; but in her collegiate debut, the Reno native showed that she has instant-impact abilities at any distance.

Meyer, by one of the narrowest margins we’ve ever seen in this pentathlon format, beat out her junior teammate Frida Berggren by .26 seconds across 5 events on Thursday at the USD-hosted annual pentathlon meet.

The two separated themselves from the field primarily on the breaststroke leg, where Meyer’s 1:06.64 and Berggren’s 1:07.16 were the two fastest times in the field by over 5 seconds.

Outside of that swim, won by Meyer, the two split the other four events, and the title came down to the final finish in the 100 IM.

Berggren outswam Meyer in that race 58.41-58.66, but she needed another three-tenths of margin to win the overall competition.

Comparative times between the two:

Meyer Berggren
100 free 52.50 52.90
100 fly 58.02 58.02
100 back 58.41 58.41
100 breast 1:06.64 1:06.64
100 IM 58.66 58.41
Total 4:54.49 4:54.23

San Diego State had the top 7 finishers in the meet. USD’s highest finisher was MacKenna Briggs in 5:18.36.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s swim team had their first competitive action of the season Thursday afternoon when they competed against San Diego State in a pentathlon. The meet was the first of the season for both squads and gave each team their first chance to get a lot of swimming in in a semi-competitive environment. While the meet was more of a structured scrimmage, SDSU wound up on top by a score of 33-24.

“I liked what I saw,” Head Coach Mike Keeler said after the meet. “It’s very early in the season and our kids are just starting to work hard, so they were pretty beaten up after racing eight events. But that’s what I asked them to do, so we could get a benchmark for where they are at.”

The first five events of the day – 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 100 IM were combined to make up the pentathlon, with points being allotted accordingly. The meet concluded with a set of sprints followed by the 400 IM and 500 free.

Sophomore Mackenna Briggs was the top Torero finished in the pentathlon. Her combined time was 5:18.36. She was followed by UCLA transfer Alex Hubel (5:21.77) and Danielle Deiparine (5:24.23).

“Our UCLA transfer Alex Hubel did a great job in all her events,” Keeler commented.

Sophomore Danielle Taylor posted impressive times in the 50 free (24.91) and 50 fly 26.96, earning third place in both events.

“Dani Taylor swam pretty well in the 50s,” Keeler stated.

Deiparine was the top USD finished in the 50 breast, finishing in 33.89, good for fourth place.

Next up for the Toreros is a couple exhibition matches. They host their annual Alumni Meet October 8 and then will have an intersquad scrimmage October 13. USD’s next formal competition will be October 22 against UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Oregon State, and UC Davis at UCLA.

The University of San Diego has been division one for many years. The other school in San Diego has just moved from D2 to D1. Heavy sigh
