Seattle Men & Women Sweep Whitworth In Decisive Fashion

SEATTLE — The Seattle University men’s swim team returned to action on Saturday, and did so in dominating fashion, winning all 14 events as it thumped Whitworth University, 201-61, before a packed crowd at the Redhawk Center.

“The guys performed really well,” said Redhawks head coach Craig Nisgor. “Today was definitely a good day and winning every event was nice. Considering all the senior day stuff, I thought the our seniors did a really good job of stepping up and it was fun to see the them finish out the right way in the pool. Overall the team swam tough and that was something we really wanted to see.”

Seniors Greg Raper and Ryan Shaw led Seattle U as each notched a pair individual of first-place finishes. Raper claimed overall victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 butterfly, recording respective times of 1:00.95 and 50.84. Shaw meanwhile was clocked in at 53.13 and 1:57.19 during the 100 and 200 backstroke, respectively.

Senior Zach Zenteno paced the field in the 200 freestyle, touching in at 1:45.52, as the Redhawks swept the event. Classmate Alex Roderick took second with a time of 1:45.99, while Jake Goguen followed at 1:47.50. Seattle U then swept the 100 freestyle. Tyler Goodspeed led the way with a time of 48.26, while Roderick and Goguen again took second and third.

A Redhawk youth movement then overtook the 200 breaststroke as junior Jack Neton’s time of 2:11.49 earned him first-overall. Seattle U sophomore Kyle Bailey then followed at 2:16.12, while freshman George Thiss completed the sweep as he touched at 2:17.43.

Ryan Ascensio, Isaac ParkerJustin KaluginWill Corona and Juan Varela also posted individual first-place finishes. Ascensio won the 200 butterfly (1:57.74), while Parker and Kalugin won the the 50 freestyle (21.40) and 500 freestyle (4:51.58), respectively. Corona overwhelmed the field by six seconds with a time of 1:55.83 in the 200 IM, while Varela won the 1650 freestyle by 23 seconds as he clocked in at 16:27.24.

Senior Shawn Fujii aided the Redhawk cause as he earned second in the 100 breaststroke (52.24) and 100 butterfly (1:01.40) and took third in the 200 butterfly (2:02.59).

In relay action, the Seattle U team of Shaw, Neton, Raper, and Goodspeed won the 400 medley as they came in at a combined time of 3:32.75. The Redhawks then completed the shoutout, winning the 400 freestyle, as the quartet of Zenteno, Roderick, Goguen and Connor Barringer touched in at 3:15.45.

The Redhawks resume action next Friday when they hit the road to take on Western Athletic Conference foe, Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The schedule of events is slated to begin at 4 pm Pacific Time.

SEATTLE — The Seattle University women’s swim team began 2020 in winning fashion, as it cruised past Whitworth University, 183-79, on Saturday at the Redhawk Center. The Redhawks dominated the race winning 12 of 14 events, which also included sweeps in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.

“We had some strong swim, but the one thing that stood out, was a that the ladies fought for every race,” said Seattle U head coach Craig Nisgor. “Considering everything else that was going on for senior day, I was happy with how we performed. The seniors did a great job staying faced and it’s great we were able to get them a win. That said, we had a number of people across the board step up as well, and it was great to see some of our juniors, sophomores and even freshmen win individual events. I think that says something about our program and the direction we’re heading.”

Jayna Van Stone led Seattle U with two individual first-place finishes, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:57.86, before clocking in at 5:17. 58 in the 500 freestyle. Maddie Rapp also won placed first in the 200 butterfly (2:11.17), while Julia Gorman notched an overall victory in the 100 freestyle (54.80) and claimed second in the 200 free (1:58.15).

Allison PlamondonBryn Lasher and Margaux Thompson went 1-2-3 in the 50 freestyle. Plamondon led the trio as she touched in at 25.20, while Lasher and Thompson followed at 25.42 and 26.06. Tessa OliverSherlyn Devadason and Emily Bakewell then helped the Seattle U sweep the 200 IM. Oliver took the overall victory as she was clocked in at 2:12.68, while Devadason edged out Bakewell with respective times of 2:21.07 and 2:21.38.

Danika Himes and Lasher also added to the first-place tallies. Himes won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.15, while Lasher took the 100 butterfly in 59.78.

Caitlin Caruso then won the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.12, ahead of Darian Himes, who’s time of 2:34.89 was two-hundredths of a second shy of second.

Michaela Day and Alexa Hoeper finished second and third respectively in the 1650 freestyle. Day posted a time of 18:31.89, while Hoeper registered at 18:41.28. Hoeper then bounced back to win the 200 backstroke in 2:12.94.

In the 100 backstroke, Jennifer Wong took second with a time of 1:02.40, while Marissa Chan followed at 1:02.88. Chan later picked up another top three finish, placing third in the 200 back as she came in at 2:16.54.

Also helping the Redhawk cause were second-place finishes from Plamondon in the 100 free (54.85), Oliver in the 200 butterfly (2:13.68) and Isabella Guadiamos in the 100 butterfly (1:00.56) as well as a third-place finished from Emma McGill in the 500 freestyle (5:31.36)

In relay action, the Seattle U quartet of Plamondon, Darian Himes, Devadason and Gorman won the 400 medley as they combined for a time of 4:05.55. The Redhawks also won the 400 freestyle as the team of Guadiamos, Lasher, Thompson and Van Stone paced the field by nearly five seconds, as they touched in at 3:43.36.

Seattle U will return to action next Friday on the road as it visits Colorado Springs, Colorado to face Air Force and Northern Colorado. The schedule of events is slated to start at 4 pm Pacific Time.

SEATTLE – After a challenging winter break training session near San Diego, the Whitworth University swimming teams returned to competitive form on Saturday afternoon in a big way with a dual meet at NCAA Division I Seattle University.  The host Redhawks won the women’s meet 183-79 and they won the men’s dual 201-61.

It was the final non-conference competition of the season for the Pirates.

Cameron Lyon and Hannah Galbraith led the way for Whitworth’s women.  Lyon took first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:24.39.  She finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:22.27.

Galbraith won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.32 and took second place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.06).  She also led off the women’s 400-yard medley relay, which finished second with a time of 4:08.21.

Jamie Siegler was also on that medley relay and she posted a pair of second place finishes.  She was runner-up in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.37) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.87).

The Whitworth men struggled to find the top of the podium against the deeper NCAA Div. I foes.  The Pirates’ 400 medley relay finished second with a time of 3:37.80.  Logan Todd took second in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.56.  William Walters was the runner-up in the 200 backstroke in 2:01.04.

The Pirate swimming teams will return to Northwest Conference competition next weekend with dual meets at Puget Sound (Friday) and Pacific Lutheran (Saturday).
