In a dual meet with Whitworth on Friday, the Seattle women earned a dominant 149-55 victory. The Redhawks won all but one event to win the meet. On the mens side, a tight battle lead to a 103-101 victory for Seattle. Full results can be found here.

Men:
In a competition that was close the entire night, the Seattle University men’s swim team used its depth to defeat Whitworth University, 104-101, Friday night at the Whitworth Aquatics Center.
The Redhawks’ first event win of the meet came in the 1000 freestyle, when Austin Barnard (Mill Creek, Wash.) finished first with a time of 9:59.03, over a 10-second victory.Nick Connors (Richland, Wash.) was able to touch the wall first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.74, just 18/100ths of a second ahead of the second place finisher. Also in the 200 freestyle, Alec Barnard (Everett, Wash.) finished third in 1:48.21, followed by Will Wertz (Richland, Wash.) in fourth place in 1:50.61, plus Morgan Montemayor (Seattle, Wash.) actually posted the fastest time in the event at 1:45.20, but he participated as an exhibition swimmer.
Connor Webb (Hood River, Ore.) won the 400 individual medley by almost five full seconds with a season-best time of 4:13.59, with Grant Gooding (Portland, Ore.) finishing in third place in 4:22.37. Jack Baldoni (Applegate, Calif.) won the 100 butterfly in a time of 50.86 seconds, with Tanner Schelling (Boise, Idaho) finishing in third place in 52.47 seconds andAlec Barnard finishing fourth in 52.69 seconds. Schelling would later clinch the meet for the Redhawks with a victory in the 100 breaststroke in 57.28 seconds, followed by Webb in second place in 59.86 seconds and Ben Nussbaum (Issaquah, Wash.) in fourth place in 1:00.11.
The 50 freestyle was very close, with Matt Morris (Lufkin, Texas) finishing second by just 3/100ths of a second with a time of 21.89 seconds, followed by Baldoni in third place in 21.98 seconds and Mitchell Crossen (Puyallup, Wash.) in fourth place in 22.38 seconds. The 100 freestyle was just as close, with Jacob Morris (Tigard, Ore.) falling 3/100ths of a second short of a victory, finishing second in 48.89 seconds, followed by Crossen in third place in 49.00 seconds and Julian Morales (Phoenix, Ariz.) in fourth place in 50.52 seconds.
Later in the meet, Connors finished second in the 500 freestyle by just 22/100ths of a second with a time of 4:51.92, followed by Austin Barnard in third place in 4:55.40. In the final event of the meet, the team of Montemayor, Baldoni, Crossen, and Wertz posted a season-best time of 3:11.16 in the 400 freestyle relay, but they were 2/100ths of a second behind the winners from Whitworth.
Seattle University (1-3) will face Whitworth again Saturday, Jan. 9, starting at 12 noon.
Women:
The Seattle University women’s swim team won 10 of 11 events Friday night as the Redhawks defeated Whitworth University, 149-55, at the Whitworth Aquatics Center.
Seattle U started with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay, with the quartet of Maddie Dickman (Sacramento, Calif.), Blaise Wittenauer-Lee (Portland, Ore.), Jane Liggett (Portland, Ore.), and Kelly Hartman (East Wenatchee, Wash.) winning with a time of 3:58.14. In the 1000 freestyle, Allie McGavock (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished second with a time of 11:10.72, followed by Emily Breyer (Tualatin, Ore.) in third place in 11:12.81.
Three Redhawks earned two individual wins during the meet, including Hartman, who won the 50 freestyle in 24.91 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 55.36 seconds. Hartman led a Seattle U 1-2-3 finish in the 100 freestyle, as Sidney Pinger (Tualatin, Ore.) finished second in 55.75 seconds and Dickman finished third in 56.35 seconds. Also, Stephanie Bayless (Spokane, Wash.) posted a time of 55.43 seconds in the 100 freestyle as an exhibition swim after finishing third in the 50 freestyle in 25.78 seconds.
Wittenauer-Lee won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.83 seconds, just ahead ofKaitlyn Overstreet (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) in second place in 1:00.85. Wittenauer-Lee then cruised to a 5.23-second victory in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.85.
Swimming in her hometown, Madi Lydig (Spokane, Wash.) picked up her first win of the meet in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.32, ahead of freshmen Celeste Salopek (Farmington, Conn.) in second place in 1:59.89 and Emily Gough (San Clemente, Calif.) in third place in 2:00.50. Lydig won the 500 freestyle in a season-best time of 5:12.12, with Liggett finishing in second place in 5:19.18. Lydig also wrapped up the meet by anchoring the 400 freestyle relay, joining with Paige Treff (Orland, Calif.), Salopek, and Gough for a winning time of 3:45.24.
Kate Sabourin (Santa Rosa, Calif.) won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:41.15, ahead of Pinger in second place in 4:46.96. Annika Perry (Reno, Nev.) touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.81, just ahead of Gough in second place in 1:01.31.
Seattle University (6-3) will face Whitworth again Saturday, Jan. 9, starting at 12 noon.
Whitworth:
SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth pushed visiting Seattle University all the way to the final two events before falling 104-101 to the Redhawks in a non-conference men’s swimming dual meet on Friday night. Seattle won the women’s meet 149-55.
The Pirate men gave themselves a chance to win the meet by claiming three straight events in the second half of the program. The big one was a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Jason Smith won in 51.37 and Wes Waltonfollowed in 51.95. When Kevin Moore followed with a come-from-behind win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.70, Whitworth had pulled within 85-84 with two events left.
But Seattle finished 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke to give themselves enough of a point gap to survive Whitworth winning the 400 freestyle relay, the meet’s final event. Walton and Smith were on that relay, along with Logan Streit and Kyle Wicks. The Pirates posted a season-best time of 3:11.14, just ahead of Seattle U in 3:11.16.
Whitworth also won the first men’s event of the night. Walton, Wicks, Eben Schumann and Trevor Case won the 400 medley relay in 3:29.97.
Wicks also sprinted to a win in the 50 freestyle (21.86) while Case pulled out a win in the 100 freestyle (48.86).
Megan Thompson was the only Whitworth winner in the women’s meet. She pulled out to an early lead and held on to claim the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:04.99.
Jerusha Dressel had a couple of second-place finishes for the Bucs. She was second in the 50 free (25.69) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.08).
Whitworth and Seattle will complete in a second straight dual meet on Saturday at noon.
